It isn't strictly Minnesota, though. I'm from Wisconsin and you hear that a lot here, as well. (Our former governor was reknowned for his use of "workin', eatin', spendin', taxin'," etc. Thanks!

I grew up in the midwest and have a midwestern accent. It was never noticable to me until I moved to the south and now I get commented on it all the time. In fact, my husband teases me about my accent sometimes. [Edited 5/15/08 16:48pm] - [Edited 5/16/08 12:06pm]

true..and in America it's regional accents as well. I was Born in Florida 4 example, but when I moved 2 Coloumbus and Huntington (more northern) I sounded different than how ppl sound in Florida...even a difference between Columbus,Ohio 2 Huntington W.Virginia...and those citys being Very close together. follow the leader follow the leader

Where are you from, Honey? When I think of accent, I think of out-of-the-States. Anything within the States... I'm used to it and don't consider it accent. It's just the way I see it.

I'm a Minneapolis native (I currently live within a mile from P's childhood home), and I would say that Prince sounds like a dude from Minneapolis.
That's my opinion, at least.

Prince is also a masterful impressionist of character voices. He could do a cartoon, and rival Mel Blanc with the diversity of characters. The old pimp voice is one of my favs. He even did an NYC Italian character on the NPG album Exodus. He cannot do NY Jewish, though. Every time I hear "Sol" at the end of the "Kiss" extended, I just go that's not him tho, that's susanha saying "sol" man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I never noticed a n accent on the man and for years, I thought he was from California, like every other singer I liked.
It was years before I found out he lived in Minnesota. His voiced never threw me. But then again, I've lived my whole life in Texas and dont show an accent unless I actually saw :Prince's name. It comes out as "Pree-ance" rather than straight Prince and it annoys me1 LOL! I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me. Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots. Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol. Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol. Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

When he is speaking in his natural voice, like on talk show interviews etc. he has a typical midwestern/Minneapolis accent.
In movies, on records etc, espin the 80's, he speaks with more of a "black" accent and interjects urban African American dialect (which is influenced by the southern roots of many AAs. E.g. many African Americans all over the country use y'all as part of their dialect especially if their parents, grandparents etc. came from the south, though it can be pronounced very differently (e.g. Salt N Pepa say 'y'awwwwl" with a very New york sound). For example, the whole scene in UTCM with "Wrecka Stow" etc. In many songs he affects a more urban accent by dropping the R's at the end of words, but his natural speaking is more Midwestern and over pronounces the R's at the end of words. He was "Sol" - the one the woman was talking to. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
