Her name was Mattie Shaw and she was born in Louisiana in 1934. She arrived in Minneapolis in the 1950s and sang in John L Nelsons group. Her and John married in 1958 and divorced in the late 60s, and she married a Hayward Baker, another person of some Caucasian admixture. She identified as African American but apparently had more than a trace of Caucasian blood in her, she may have been as much as half white, but actual facts are unknown, few records were kept in the Jim Crow south (all paraphrased form Liz Smith 1998 and Alex Hahn 2003). She passed away sometime in the 1990s and apparently Prince had great respect for her and toned down his x rated antics whenever she was at one of his concerts or gigs
