That said, here's hoping any DVD release will look better than the AWFUL Live At The Aladdin. Otherwise, why bother? I'm with you. This pre-order for the 21 Nights book/CD is way too far in the future to not get pulled at the last minute due to "manufacturing issues". I'll wait till it's closer to the release date to pre-order. Remember that Prince wanted 100,000 pre-orders on Crystal Ball before he would press them. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

That's not for certain. Cd's have been quite stable in recent years, while music dvd's had a boom a few years ago but have dropped drastically since! You won't find many new music dvd releases anymore. Not from where I'm standing. Everyone's putting out live DVDs. The record shops may not be stocking them all, but they're available. And I'm not really sorry. If I want music, I put on a record, not the tv! I should mention that I produce concert DVDs for a living... It's interesting at the moment, but concert DVDs sell very well to fans - better than live CDs I suspect - and importantly, earn great margins for the artist, especially if sold direct instead of through a label/distributor. Many of the bands we work with make the majority of their income every year thru DVD sales and concert tickets. Making money on CD sales is much harder these days (due to piracy, online pricing, distribution, discounting, etc). Of course, Prince can do whatever he likes. I only hope that the audio for this rumoured CD is better than the mix of Chaos & Disorder from the Indigo that was featured on 3121. Getting awesome-sounding live recordings isn't difficult or expensive (you just employ the right people), so there's not really any excuse. In fact, I was at the Indigo a few weeks ago recording a DVD for an artist, and had an interesting conversation regarding the Prince aftershows (which I loved by the way). By all accounts there were plans to film... then plans were shelved. A shame, because despite his filming quite a few shows, there have been only two live DVDs by our man in recent years (and in my view, neither of them is particularly stellar... although I do enjoy the Aladdin show). If he'd like to set up those London dates this autumn, and wants to film them, I know great people! e.g. www.digforfire.tv

I work in a music-shop and I see numbers indicating the music-dvd share is dropping. I do believe there is a market for it, like you mentioned, when the artist keeps it independent. Via the shops is probably too expensive and not enough demand. About the income of a band. Isn't it strange that only a few years back a tour was to promote a new album. Nowadays it seems the other way around. Get a record out, get it played on the radio, so you can make some money on the road. .sp. [Edited 5/8/08 16:52pm]

i actually prefer to watch DVD's of live music then to listen to a live CD. More than 1/2 the experience of a live show is the performance, especially with an artist like Prince. If you can't see him performing live you're missing out!!
His lack of live concerts available to watch on DVD or in ANY format (youtube, promotional videos, etc.) is more than disappointing for fans it's a great loss historically, as he is one of the best (or THE best) performers ANY generation has ever seen live. I have Shakira's newest live DVD, and it ROCKS! I watch a live concert DVD almost every night...Hello! Project concerts mainly, but I would watch Prince more if I could...sad, just sad. Sander said: Thanks for the nice write-up! @ 'for a living'. I hope I didn't offend you. I work in a music-shop and I see numbers indicating the music-dvd share is dropping. Interesting... Music DVD's share of what has been dropping?... total DVD sales? (e.g. movies, TV shows)? (I can well believe that). Or compared to Music DVD sales last year? Or relative to CD sales? I can't imagine anything's dropping quite as fast as CD sales! I do believe there is a market for it, like you mentioned, when the artist keeps it independent. Via the shops is probably too expensive and not enough demand. There's definitely a nice predictable market for concert DVDs. It is a fan thing though... for instance Black Eyed Peas could sell hundreds of thousands of CDs to casual listeners, but I would bet would have a harder time selling live DVDs. But if you have a big committed fan base like Prince does, it's pretty easy to sell boat-loads of DVDs, and the production costs aren't as sky high as people imagine. Most bands would say, if there's a profit to be made, it's worth doing. Fans will always buy a live DVD as well as a studio album, it's not as if sales of one cannibalise sales of the other. I agree, in this day and age it doesn't seem entirely necessary to sell via shops. Funny, because Prince was way ahead of the game with that idea (and being an independent artist, is perfectly placed to take advantage of it), and has seemed to have dropped online sales just as everyone else is embracing it. Worth remembering that live DVDs don't get the promotion that albums do, and that might translate into smaller sales. There's way more of a fanfare when a new studio album comes out, and every time you hear a song on the radio or MTV it works as promotion for the album. How do you ever hear about a concert DVD? About the income of a band. Isn't it strange that only a few years back a tour was to promote a new album. Nowadays it seems the other way around. Get a record out, get it played on the radio, so you can make some money on the road. It is strange. I'm not sure if it's a bad thing or a good thing. Increased interest in live music good. The devaluing of recorded music, bad. When you get to the point of having to give away your new album, it does worry me (e.g. Prince, Radiohead, NIN...) Ease of recording and releasing your own music and the resulting disposability of new artists... has good and bad sides to it. On balance though, I think it's a pretty exciting time for music, in the UK at least. Anyway, come on Prince, it's way past time there was a truly great live DVD from you. PS zero offence taken.

There are about 4 or 4.5 songs on there among a lot of throwaway filler. I'm feeling generous today. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Way too tall for Princes usual! However she has that look from recent years, hispanic looking and hes changed her name. She must be the 'beauty' thats been reported with him and yet no name released which is odd. I think shes just another chelsea rodgers, a model whose become a muse for him, p like designers do except they are mostly gay and therefore choose comletely unreal women that are exceedingly tall and angular - oops did i just say that! Some things never change, and Prince and his women are one of them.....it's the same old, same old where they are concerned!
