Delia Derbyshire Who's Delia Derbyshire? a new female protegee? another woman on her bed?
NO. Delia Derbyshire (1937-1961) was a british composer and arranger, who worked mainly in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. She composed and played many continuity music for the brit company, including the main title for popular series 'Doctor Who'. She was a pioneer of electronic music when synthesizers were on its infancy, and has been a heavy influence for electronic grups such Stereolab, Orbital and many others. In 1964, Delia released a work called 'The Dreams', a 5-piece oniric suite made of a collage-like mix of electronic sounds and people telling their dreams. Well, the most important thing here is: the atmospheric sound you can hear both at the beginning and end of 'Lovesexy' album is a direct sampling of an excerpt of 'The Dreams'. Of course, the sampling is absolutely uncredited in the record credits Anyway, at that time NOBODY credited samples, but now u ought to. Mr. Nelson, in your epic struggle with rights' recognition, maybe you should be coherent now we know and credit and PAY rights to Delia Derbyshire copyright holders. (Unfortunately she's dead). You played that sample not only in the record, but countless times in the 'Lovesexy' tour. I guess you also used it in several parts of Ingrid Chavez's album (1991). Maybe BBC and Miss Derbyshire copyright holders should know about this. Or did you already payed all those rights? guess not. This piece is gonna be released on Princefams, Housequake.com and Prince.org, the 3 most important sites on Prince on the net. Feel free to release it on any other Prince dedicated site. Given the tone of your comments, I presume you are clear on your facts when you make statements which imply Prince has infringed copyright? Have you established that there has has been a copyright infringement? Who were the copyright holders of the work in 1988?? Do you have evidence that the work was not made available for legitimate use by others (either generally, or specifically Prince), either as copyright-free or under licence? If you have established that and can substantiate the implication of your comments, all well and good. Otherwise, it doesn't make good sense to publish such implied allegations on the three websites that have in the very recent past been in dispute with Prince over matters of legal rights Incidentally, Delia Derbyshire didn't die, as you state, in 1961. She died in 2001. . [Edited 5/3/08 10:30am] ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

That was interesting reading and God rest her soul...I didn't know her.. however, if she has died, no-one knows if Delia would not have lovingly enjoyed her sliver of work on a Prince record. Some people are just happy to be in musical company as teacher's. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Scolding someone for making a point that no one has brought up is a valid one regardless of what you interject. Sometimes I think you intentionally try to inject yourself just so you can get into a overt- analytical legalese-fest just to be heard. It's kind of a pattern with you to correct others on any little trivial thing. Do you notice that at all with yourself? Does that hinder any of your real relationships with people? Are you aware of that? Just so you know, it's kind of snarky to do that repeatedly. You are reminiscent like the web sheriff or a frustrated trial lawyer just looking for a rouse on any little miniscule point ,btw. And that gets old real fast. This isn't Law and Order/Boston Legal/ and there ia no legal rammifications for bringing up discussion of past copyright violations regarding this artiat,PERIOD. Nothing is going to happen to Prince.org or Housequake because this person is opening a dialogue on a copyrighted sampling of Delia Derbyshire's work. I find this discussion fascinating. It happens regularly on discussion forums. It's called opionated discussion. I don't want to say you are trying to sabotage the topic or just to make a Lange bleu cameo and say "I would advise..." It is kind of annoying and obtrusive to have that kind of personality I would imagine. Just thought you should know how you sound and come across. It's like with a authoritarian wagging finger. Like you are the alpha and omega with your opinion on here. Nothing is going to happen this person or this site because he brings this to light. We all know that. It's deluded paranoia at best. NO. Bootsy, thanks for sharing something that wasn't well known to this community. This is exactly what I hate about the copyright tattle tale game from hypocritical musicians. This kind of topic is going to get you alot of snark terrorism in here. (That is for sure) But do not let that hinder you in the future. Nice post and keep us up to date with what kind of response you get. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

There's a lot of misinformation and assumption in this thread (particularly the
opening post), so here are the FACTS.... Firstly, the intro to the Lovesexy album does indeed use a soundscape by Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (who died in 2001, not 1961). However it's not any of the pieces from "The Dreams". It's a different composition entitled "Clouds". Secondly, "Clouds" comes from a royalty-free Library Music collection (which is like the music equivalent of a sound effects disc), so no copyrights were infringed with it's use on Lovesexy and no credit is required. In fact, this kind of use is exactly what tracks like "Clouds" were intended for! I'm sure Delia (and the Radiophonic Workshop ) would have been delighted to know that one of her compositions got used like this, as they usually don't get much exposure outside of use for incidental music in film/TV or radio commercials etc.

muirdo and boris hit the nail on the head, the kind of music that she made was library archive stuff like dewulf
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...olfe_Music prince certainly has a box of sample cds at paisley park, although obviously cd's weren't around when 1999 was recorded (and neither was paisley), so it's quite possible that's how the part ended up on lovesexy if it it wasn't library music and wasn't credited on the record, it doesn't necessarily mean that royalties aren't paid perhaps the op should have made clear whether he researched this or not before posting, in order to clarify the position and avoid unnecesary conflict. the fact that it's not mentioned suggests he was unaware of these possible explanations, but that doesn't answer the question as to why the op would post in such a way to allege that something untoward went on (20 years ago!). what does the op have to do with the issue? notably he can't even get the dates wrong that she lived. what other errors are contained in the post? Apart from getting her name and job right, the post is completely false. Wrong dates, wrong piece of music, wrong info and wrongly accusing Prince of dishonest behavior.

For those vaguely interested, I attended a theatre production called 'Standing Wave' a few years ago based on Delia's life, and it was extremely interesting. She was a true pioneer of electronic music, well before Kraftwerk etc.
