I don't want Prince to retire the hits...

...just a few of the hits.

Do we really need to hear him perform that same old schmaltzy version of Let's Go Crazy at every performance?

"Gooooo crazy. Go, go, go!"

Let's also retire the overblown horns-filled renditions of Kiss, please.

headache

He should never play any hits from Purple Rain ever again (except maybe Purple Rain itself because it's become his trademark).

Maybe I've just been attending the wrong shows, but I can't remember the last time I heard full versions of When Doves Cry or I Would Die 4 U. For WDC, the last time for me, I only heard one line of it (and he wasn't even on stage at the time) during the Hit n Run tour. So I'd be okay with those.

Okay, I stand corrected. Sorry, I'm not a Prince scholar.

Those versions of Kiss I heard still didn't sound anywhere near as minimalist as the original studio cut, and that's what made the song so amazing.

I don't think Prince should retire any of the hits but some of them could use a rest. I would like to miss Lets Go Crazy. I'd like to miss Kiss, Nothing Compares 2 U and Take Me With U. He shouldn't play them for almost 10 years and them drop a bomb on us the same way he did with 1999, ressurecting that song from the dead and getting people excited to hear it live again. Just my take on it.

Yeah, I think you're right. He shouldn't refrain from playing them ever again, but just for a long period of time.

I think he should limit the hits

and "freshen them up" when he does play them
i.e. quit the "Gooooo crazy!...Go Go Go" routine like Purpleknight said
If you will, so will I

Here's a reason why he can't, or shouldn't.

Now, I've been to four Prince concerts throughout the years...and have enjoyed every one of them. The Musicology Tour was where he played all his hits, or tried to, there's just so damned many!

I've been fortunate enough to hear him play b-sides, hits and just jam... it's all cool, and I never tire of it.

However, that being said, when I was in Las Vegas at the Rio for 3121, he played b-sides, mostly new stuff from 3121, some Musicology stuff and a few of his signature hits, though they were done medley style; hardly the way they should truly be played. He even played some Gnarls Barkley (sp?) and Earth, Wind & Fire... it was all very cool! Problem was, it was my brother's (and his wife's) first time seeing him and he was sooooo looking forward to hearing him play Purple Rain. As a Prince fan, I could enjoy another round of Purple Rain, but he would have been in 7th heaven to have heard that.

Alas, he did not. He played some other stuff my brother (a casual fan) recognized and enjoyed. But he was bummed when he didn't hear the song he truly wanted to hear.

I imagine there's others who are "casual fans" who enjoy hearing him play the songs they recognize... therefore, he cannot retire them... nor should he. So there it is... that's why! hmph!

There are us that know the songs by heart, but like June7 says...Musicology was the 6th or 7th concert I have seen...and it is only because I couldn't attend...Not because I didn't want to be on the tours everynight...cuz I did.

nice suggestion..
most people going 2 dublin concert will b travelling some distance 2 get there...
not 2 many casuals, so he could probably afford 2 b less predictive & some more obscure type stuff would b a treat!

Your post right there June7 is every reason in the world why the hits can't be retired, even if Prince himself is tired of playing them and I know for a fact that he's been bored playing the same songs over and over. It's a business and in order to have a successful one, you have to cater to the consumer. Yeah you should give em something new but don't forget to continue to serve that which is a big success with customers. Give some songs a rest while pulling out other hits in it's place. Like it or not, the hits have to be played. It's just the way it is.

Snap

I don't know... when he plays for larger crowds, he knows MOST people come to see him play mostly the songs they know. When he plays aftershows and smaller venues, he knows there's gonna be a lot us there. I was standing in line for one of these aftershows once, and I was talking with one of the locals. The next day she wrote how disappointed she was because he didn't play any of the hits he's known for. Then she mentioned meeting me in line and how she felt sorry for my being at such a disappointing performance. Actually, it was one of the best times I've ever had. But yeah... that LGC arrangement he's been doing since 1987 or so needs to change. I never could get into that "Go go go..." and "Yip yip yee-haw" (or whatever it is) thing he does with it.

I agree thumbs up!
What u said makes a lot of sense. I mean, I probably would have given him a chance even if he didn't play Purple Rain at the SuperBowl... probably would make the movie version more impressive lol
or I would have heard him do it otherwise on some other recent performance (The Brits of 2006).

I really don't care either way if he keeps playing his hits or not. I do wonder, though, if any of his band members have ever gotten the courage to ask him why he plays the hits or to suggest otherwise lol
Either they understand or plain too scared to ask.

There's a lot Prince can do with his music and I won't really care what he does or how he does it as long as he is doing it.
Assuming his band doesn't ask about the issue of the hits, he's not the one who has to deal with the people constantly saying that he should retire the hits.

Gets very annoying after a while rolleyes

I'd go for that as well thumbs up!
That's what any artist should do. Because the tour IS to promote the album, right? Or at least that's how it used to be confused

exactly!!! great choices! The thing with Prince is he could get rid of all the songs you listed with these others.

Prince has so many songs that really if your a fan, all the songs are basically hits. Well atleast 90% of everything he has made.

a verse and chorus of raspberry beret doeset really count as a perfpormance of the song, it doesent deserve to be counted. whereas girls and boys was played at alot of the aftershows and about 4 or 5 of the main shows.

It would never happen in a million years, but I would love to see Prince do a tour of the hidden gems. Just something small-scale for the diehards... I suppose One Nite Alone was the closest we'll ever get to that... but that show was so boring.
