of course all music has a beat or rythm. I think jonylawson was implying something else tho. Princes is so diverse I dont see how it can be defined the way jony has.

Okay, sorry. I just got confused.
That happens to me alot. lol

Which came first: lyrics or the music?

It's very hard to tell.
With an ear like that, I suppose Prince hears the music first.

But then again, he may have gone through something or is going through something and to process it in his mind, he writes down lyrics to help him get through it.

I suppose it depends on the situation hmmm

It's one of the reasons I just cannot stomach Resolution (for example). The very first line made me go whofarted and that was all she wrote.

Sad but true.

Ooh totally agree about Resolution, I keep on trying to listen to it all the way through to see if it grows on me but as soon as I hear 'the main problem with war is that nobody ever wins' i just literally cringe and have to press skip! So the music might be fab, I wouldn't know, I can't listen to it!

But usually I guess I hear the music first and then on the second (or more) listen if the lyrics grab me as well then the song really has the potential to get onto my 'greatest' list. For example The One I adored the 'sound' of it before I sat and listened to the lyrics, and then having heard the words it became one of my all time favourites. I actually love the Rainbow Children even though I find some of they lyrical content difficult (and the really religious stuff frankly tedious), the music on this album I think is outstanding and I love listening to it.

Um so that's not really a coherent answer but I'm kind of hungover.... I guess I'm sitting on the fence with if one or the other is great, I like the song, if both are great I LOVE the song! Luckily with Prince there are so so many examples where both are genius!
You might not like the taste but I'm still gonna stick your face in this FUNK

I tend to believe that's like asking someone bilingual, what language are they thinking in...verses the language they speak.

I know that Prince hears music within him...however...poetry also has a beat. cool

a good answer!

I guess he has a mixture of both maybe an inspiration that has a few words that are blended with the sound. its an eternal source of fascination for me as i cannot make music. I can beat a rythm or sing a tune and read music but I cannot write it or create it.

True poetry has a beat too as you said Tame, this I do believe and I see pictures when I write it, perhaps it is the same for Prince and other musical artists
