To bring this thread back on topic, before it got tragically hijacked, this is a great thread. There is no more that I can add to this topic that hasn't been said already. It also goes to show how incredible an album SOTT is. The fact that we all have different views of the album but yet we all agree that Prince grew lyrically and sonically with this Album. This is not my absoulute favorite album but it's one of them. Threads like this makes me appreciate SOTT even more than before. Great thread PurpleKnight. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

When I started considering this album, I was advised to wait to get it (or rather listen to it) until I've gotten more of his work. Becaues this album has a tendency to make one appreciate other albums less because it packs such a punch Truthfully, I rarely go a day without thinking up some lyric or melody from this incredible album. It's everything you could want in a Prince album. I was even told this was where he peaked the most in the 80's and some internal struggles he'd been going through, he came to terms with here (his ego, his inability to understand what true love was, his faith, etc.). Where he defined himself as a person and a musician. No collection is complete without this gem. [Edited 5/2/08 7:02am] had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. I totally agree - but after hearing the full original version of The Dream factory, it has a slightly different feel to it! Even though The Dream factory has many of the songs that appear on SOTT, it definitely does not seem humble, or even as serious and sombre like SOTT does. I wonder if the Break up with Susannah, and then the disbanding of the revolution had more of an affect on him that we understand or realise? Oh, and Cam - Great signature note! Life's a Parade! It's arguably his best album and the big mixture of sound from this along with what he's saying on the tracks are just incredible. I think even Prince realizes how great this CD is. Truth be told, he's been making albums kinda in this style for years since Sign O The Times. Like what you said DPR, no album collection is complete without this. It's a must have for ALL music lovers. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I've not heard "The Dream Factory" as a whole but I have heard the original to Strange Relationship and what's amazing to me is how just the addition or the taking away of words from a song can totally change the context of what the song is about. Instead of saying I take all the blame and baby I'm sorry, the original states, I take all the blame but I'm only human. Just a few words y'all. Dammint Prince was, is and will always be the man for stuff like this! mentalist said: Oh, and Cam - Great signature note!

I agree for the most part, but I still say that I PREFER the arrogant Prince anyday; for me, P power lies on his endless ambition and (almost) always offended ego...

After the "Very Public" failure of Under The Cherry Moon I'm sure Prince had questioned his future and artistic being. Also his relationship with Susannah was in turmoil at the time. SOTT was his way of saying here I am exposed. Maybe it was truly the first time he was TRULY in love.
Just as he wore his heart on his sleeve he wrote his music... "The little 1 will escort u 2 the places within ur mind"
