A million times yes!!
One of my friends here said its her favorite of all Prince songs. It's my 2nd favorite. I love his vocals in that song, just beautiful And the lyrics are so poetic and sensitive. I'm willing to bet that those girls who havent fallen in love with Prince will do so once they hear this song had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Definitely....it's a very unique song with a very mysterious & eerie vibe, cool sped-up vocals, deep lyrics, and a great bass line.

It's the song that made me become a fan in 1989.
Listen to that song in the record store that day, opened the Prince world for me. I can sincerely say that there has never been a song before or after that day, that blew me away at first listen like "If I was your gorlfriend" did.

Easily in my top 3 and what makes it even more compelling is when you add the time stamp to it. The song was released in 1987 people, the entire world wasn't quite ready for lyrics like that at the time (IMHO).
I mean, Reagan had just left the White House, Rushdie had a bounty put on his head and the Soviet Union was still in existence. That will always be a ground breaking track, nothing like it since! edited for yearage accuracy 'cuz I'm old and can't think anymore, thx violetblues! I would never classify this song as sexy but oppressive devotion 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Most certainly. | |

IMO it definitely belongs in his top-5 of best songs.
Lyrics that sound both obsessed and empathic, The camill-effect on his vocals, his 'screams' (Pleaaseee.... Cryyyyy together), the layers and layers of distored background vocals, the spooky synthsound, the bass playing, the weird climax.. All top-notch!

The Camille (spelling mis) album had potential to be a classic, in my view!
"If you was my.. " is a beautiful melodic song that makes my shoulders twitch. "Dead in the middle of Little Italy little did we know
that we riddled some middleman who didn't do diddily"--BP

I think when 50 or 100 years from now music teachers are paying attention to Princes music in their lessons, If I was your girlfriend will be one of the songs they use to explain what Princes music is about.
Some other songs they might use: Automatic, When doves Cry, Sign of the Times and Kiss. I think it are those (very) stripped down, but ultimately far from simple songs, mixing different stylistic elements, will be 'the postmodern approach' Prince shall ultimately be remembered for.

The brilliant scholar/professor/writer/social critic bell hooks teaches this song in her feminist theory classes. To her, the song is an excellent representation of Prince playing with gender roles and expectations. The song is a masterpiece. All its complex parts make a brilliant whole. It also holds up well live and sounds as forward-thinking today as it did 20 years ago. It took a true, risk-taking artist to release the song as the second single off SOTT (screw all the chart watchers!)

Lyrically, It is one of his best. Maybe THE best. But I can't say that right now.
I mean, how cool are the lyrics? That's such a beautiful thing for a guy to be able to see.
