I first noticed in the Parade era, but I think Eric Leeds and Matt Blistan's presence was pretty tolerable back then. The first time the horns approached obnoxious to me was probably "Sexy MF."

Prince & The Revolution Live 1985

I'll have to agree with you. I first noticed it on Mountains, then the live version of Another Lover Hole In Your Head. The horns became more of a staple in his music after that. Slow Love, Adore, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night, Sexy Motherfucke..... etc.

I loved those. The horn break in the Anotherloverholenyohead video is my favorite part of the video.

To me, it got really bad during the Hit n Run tour when Prince let Kenny G.-wannnabe Najee put audiences to sleep with his interminable solos. Those were just awful.

Excuse me .... mad but, Kenny G is a Najee wannabe. Get a fucking clue.

I think its very obvious that Prince went horn crazy with his Parade 'tour' in 1986.

Actually, it started in 85. Take a good listen to The Ladder. He then started using more and more brass on the Parade album and subsequent tour.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The title track to "Come" sounded like he really wanted to underline that horns are a part of his sound.

That doesn't count as a real album...

That is just a horn show.

Please expand on that statement, what is a 'real album'?

One that doesn't have stupid-ass horns in it...

jim rockford since he's on the most drugs imaginable nod or maybe a q tip or a box of them will help him recognize that soul music has always had horn elements. prince just subsituted hornz 4 synthersizers..but what do i know? i'm just a musician shrug

True. Soul music has had horn elements but Prince's signature sound was using synths in the place of horns. It's what gave him a signature sound. He should have never started using horns. It made him sound like the decade before him....not to mention it made some of his music sound like jazz.

Evidently a clueless one... If the songs were meant for raggedy-ass horns, they would have them.

And when the fuck did his early music become soul???

Prince always like horns, but never really incorporated them into his music until 1985. With eric Leeds on the scene and Sheila introducing P to eddie M, I think the first real horn track was "temptation".

Then the flood gates opened. romance 1600, the Family, Parade, SOTT, Madhouse.

Prince has always used horn lines and parts. They were just synthesized earlier until he could afford a live band.

Errh? smile Thats like saying, "When did Prince first use a drum machine". Answer from For You, but he just never got a real drum machine until Controversy.

Prince could have afforded horns on 1999 no problem, but he prefered the convienence of syth based horns, strings and percussion. It was once he opened up the recording process from Purple Rain onwards that the real deal started entering his music. Eddy M, Clare Fisher, Altanta Bliss, Sheila, Eric. etc etc.

This is just ridiculous... If a line was meant to be horns, it would have been fucking horns.

This whole idea of substituting is just stupid.
