Why Prince appeals to different people.

You have to know that even in The States Prince has an audience of all types of people. What I want to know is would all of you still love him if he did 1 type of music. Or is Rock,Dance,Funk,Disco or Hip Hop the reason you listen to him?

If someone excels at whatever they do, they usually appeal to a mass audience and cross over boundaries, genres, cultures, race....no? confused But if I had to choose one type of music? I'd go for funk!

I think it could be because his music isn't just stuck in one genre specifically. It's not completely rock, it's not completely R&B, it's just.....PRINCE.

He's his own genre and you really can't go wrong there in terms of audience.

You're gonna appeal to everyone's tastes sooner or later.

Good question hmmm

I mean he's nowhere near your typical artist. He not only does all thse gneres, but he plays all these instruments and plays all kinds of good music.

But honestly, what got me was his energy. Two examples: the last 2 songs he did in Purple Rain. And him dancing jig during the guitar solo in the LRC video.

Of course, I noticed his dedication first. He's a true songwriter that takes everything into perspective. He's gifted with melodies and poetic lyrics mushy As a musician, he apperaed to leave nothing to chance and nobody's as hard working as he is or lives for the music the way he does. He makes music look/sound like an artform!

And he could have been anything. Black, white, straight, gay... that wouldn't have changed a thing. Though I'll say this. He's the first musician of color whose music I ever listened to extensively. I didnt know what to think of his sexual orientation because nothing would have surprised me too much wink He could have been any of those things. It didn't change the fact that he had a great amount of talent.

Truley, in ways, he's taught me how much inner beauty counts in this world. He's got a beautiful soul and somehow, his music has a way of making you want to dip into your own soul to either make it beautiful or perfect its beauty so you'll not only see, but others will see it as well.

One look in his eyes, and that pretty much seals the deal cool

Now if he stuck with only funk, pop, rock, or one genre, I'd still dig his music, though after a while, it may get a little repetitive and dare I say, boring... so I'm glad he does all kinds of music

I like him purely for the music, not the image and the fuss that goes with him. He is unique and very talented and that I respect and admire.

Prince appealed to me because he scared me and excited me at the same time. He was someone I couldn't understand all at once, and that made him fascinating. You know, the booty out pants, and the name change, and the Slave on the face, it all just blew my mind as a kid. And I still get tripped out as an adult from time to time over the things he does.

Plus his music is damn cool too!

On race a thing is would his race matter. Both Prince and Michael draw multiracial audiences. But if you think for a second the fact tha they are black helped them. In THe United States black people hardly listen to "non-black genres". But at say a Depeche Mode or Metallica concert you will see Whites, hispanics, asians,a nd indians. It may be true for the rest of the country but for Texas which is slightly part of The South the brothas and sista don't come out for that sort of stuff. I don't think they would have been as big if they were white. Look at what happened to Michael when his skin changed color.

Then theere's the issue of if they would have been bigger. Mcichael is a top regardless of his color. But Madoona actualy outsold Prince. This is funny cause we generally think that Prince is right after Michael. COuld it be cause there are more white people in America and The World? Or is white the world's biggest culture? I do notice that most young americans regardless of race talk more valley. AT 4th would be Janet. I don't know where Tina and Whitney fall in this 80s picture.

I wonder if skin was the reason why alot of african-americans stopped listening to Michael.

Hey, I kinda resent that remark. I amboth from Texas and Black and race never prompts me in the type of music I listen to. For years, I thought Prince was biracial--which didn't matter to me at all--until someome told me he was fully black. And as for Michael, I buy anything Michael breathes on. And the color change in his skin or his plastic surgery hasn't changed how I feel about him. I listen to a wide variety of music from rock to funk to country. It doesn't matter to me what a person looks like or what color thier skin is. If they sound good to me, that's all that matters.

And Michael's color never stopped me from buying Michael's albums. I personally own 40 different MJ cds and line up as something new drops. (And I have just as many Prince cds too.)

Prince appeals to people because he's good, and that's what people like and that's what sells, GOOD music. biggrin

Well yes you woulb more of a minority. I was standing outside a Lenny Kravitz concert in Houston. I saw tons of white people, maybe a few hispanics an a couple asians. I saw not one black person and he is black! He's not only Prince's friend but he does rock and he too has had a public perception of being biracial. Iwanna kno w is it just Texas or do black folks buy Lenny Kravits around teh country?

well first i'd just like to ask you.. where are you from? .. where im from, young ppl dont talk valley, i've lived in both New Jersey and Miami and young folk didnt talk valley ...if u're basing your opinions on young ppl around you.. well, that's where you live.. if either Michael or Prince have lost any fans, it wasnt cause of their skin color....

Prince's appeal to the massess is very comparable to the appeal level a sports fan displays for a Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird type.

When someone is so talented, even more so than those in the same pool of others with similar talents (cream of the crop) we admire that. Because they're the best of the best and we appreciate that level of excellence. I believe we want to identify with the Prince and Michael Jordans of the world because we like to dream about what it would be like to have their talent and lifestyles.

Such appeal certainly crosses all boundaries which is also admirable because deep down most people want to be liked and appreciated.

Prince has been truely unique from day one.
He vehemently refused to be labeled and put into any kind of category.
With his diversity he was able to bridge the gap that people of different race, creed, sexual orientation, nationality often have.
I was born and raised in Germany and even though I wasn't able to understand most of his lyrics initially, I was always facinated by his charisma, intellect and talent. Once I overcame the language barrier I was even more blown away by the spiritual message that most of his songs deliver.
I find it also very interesting how sexuality and spirituality goes hand in hand when it comes to Prince's music. How he connects both is very appealing to me.
The man knows he is here on a mission to spread an important spiritual message.
In order to fulfill this message he uses his stage as a platform and his music to bring people together.
