I think Prince wanted to build a simple bridge between him and an audience that would be mixed; meaning it was not an audience that came for him especially. yep!! very shrewd and well received, he knows how to play a crowd. Afterall he is a showman, Prince interacts with his audience and seems to feed off thm as they feed off him. Its a two way street. He musta learnt that way back at the stones gig. Its hard to play a crowd who arent into you or your music and he had no way of knowing how many Prince fans would be there compared to other groups of fans. I found it gratifying to see the youtube clips some people took showing the crowd ALL joining in and waving or clapping along. The girls worked the crowd too and made it a big party - excellent stuff!! Wish I was there to see it!. the more u mention on where u saw it the more it draws attention 2 those that r policing this site thus causing those that haven't seen it missing out. so please in the future, if u want 2 discuss where u have or HAVE NOT seen it, drop an orgnote 2 someone ..thank u man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Anxiety said: oh, but i DO agree that prince does get catty about other artists from time to time. i remember his less-than-flattering words for foo fighters when an interviewer asked him what he thought about their cover of "darling nikki"...i thought it all the more odd that he'd turn around and cover them at the superbowl. Well he didn't say anything about the Foo Fighters in particular, other than he didn't like anyone covering his songs. He did call out Ginuwine by name though (deservedly). I took his cover as a bit of an olive branch, since they seem to be on the list of bands he respects. [Edited 4/28/08 11:40am] "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

Same here. And why Creep? Maybe cuz he knows Radiohead hardly ever play it live?

I have never seen any real interest by him for the indie / alternative rock artists. But hey; I could be wrong... That he does not play indie/alternative covers more often does not mean he is not aware of these things. Just cuz he hardly ever acknowledges other artists, except maybe in an odd interview, or playing a cover (live or on album) does not mean he might not be the biggest Radiohead fan out there, bobbing his head to The Amazing Sounds Of Orgy. Indeed, we just don't know. And I like thathe keeps us guessing. It's part of the game, I suppose.

I would be interested to know what the Radiohead fans are saying about his version. I forwarded the clip (no orgnotes please) to my friend, who is a huge Radiohead fan. She wrote back and said, "so that was kind of a big deal huh?" I was like, "Not to me, I don't like that song, even Prince's version." but she didn't say whether she liked it or not.
Anyone have any links to forums where Radiohead fans are discussing it? . [Edited 4/28/08 11:51am]

I mean, apart from him liking the UK indie-band The Sundays (something he said in an interview in the late eighties), i have never saw any real interest by him for the indie / alternative rockartists. To me it appears like he asked some people (bandmembers? his management?) for advice about songs that will do 'good' with the alternative rock / festival crowd, and he choose this two out of the ones mentioned. It all appears to me as a calculated move to 'please'. I cannot look inside his head, for sure, but i really think Prince had rather played a Hendrix-cover or some Sly Stone-medley then these two songs. But, hey i could be wrong... he's also said in years past that he enjoys bjork and cocteau twins. plus, it's no secret that he's an admirer of kates' bush. i wouldn't doubt that his choice of performing a radiohead song was strategic for the benefit of the coachella audience, but why "creep"? the foo fighters song seemed like a more logical choice, as it was a bit more current. "creep" is so not-prince in terms of its lyrics, not to mention there are radiohead songs much more suited to his style of playing. i'd love to have heard him tackling "just", for example. not that i'm complaining. it's pretty amazing to hear prince cover ANYTHING by radiohead. it just seemed like a really random choice, kinda like when he covered that cars song during 7/7/07 last year. just what the heck is that supposed to mean??!

what did radiohead say about prince?

I only asked because I remember when prince did a cover of the foo fighters song at the superbowl the drummer from the foo fighters thought he was having a go at the band because prince didnt like the foo fighters covering his songs. Although Ive never heard radiohead do a cover of a prince song they did a superb cover of nobody does it better, Id personally love to hear them put there spin on a prince song. I think Prince likes to remind you at the end of the day after all his bullsh*t rumours, new religious fads, new projects that never come to light, new dancers, etc.... at the very end of all that stuff I can do without.....
He is still one of the premier MUSICIANS ON THE PLANET>>>>> and can single handedly take over any show in any music forum except for maybe jazz. Prince just wanted us to know that before Radiohead there was Prince an 18yr old prodigy who wrote and PLAYED music that broke down boundaries and made people take notice. I believe that in the today's Rock world there are not a lot of true talented musicians (I am talking signed artists, we all know tons of unsigned talent), but the genre tends to get a pass, and Prince is often not mentioned in rock circles albeit for true musicians, so performances like "While my Guitar, Fury on SNL, Best of you on Superbowl, and Creep show you that he can kick most of these average rock guy's/gals asses. Like look all you guys play is rock, and I am more R&B funk and I still play with more passion than you. Personally I think this is exactly what he should record a straight guitar album with no keyboards doubling his lines etc. [Edited 4/28/08 12:17pm] Music is the best...

By the way just out of interest how long has it been since he did a festival ie where the crowd hadnt all just come to see prince. I think he should do all the festivals including fingers crossed glastonbury it would make the shows far more interesting and prince would have to be more on the ball. I mean when fans go to see a prince concert everyone in the crowd are already fans whereas at a festival he can convert lots of new people if he played glastonbury he could come away with 150,000 new fans I think its the way he should go. The last time I´ve seen him do a festival gig was in 1993, in Lüneburg. That was a VERY big audience, some say 110.000 people, others say 70.000 people. I don´t know the numbers but there were lots of people and the show was great. It started raining just when he started to play Purple Rain, and the lights made the rain look purple. And the version he did was fantastic. One of those magic moments you´ll remember for a lifetime. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I often wondered if prince had heard of radiohead and listened to there music as their album ok computer is always being voted the greatest of all time in the english music magazine polls. Its just a shame I cant hear his version of it.
What a treat 4 all those in attendance who got 2 witness this man sing Creep. He’s a hard act 2 follow. Sorry I don’t know anything about the group Radiohead, but I did get 2 listen 2 there version of Creep and love it, but I also got 2 hear Princes version of it and totally love it more. It’s amazing how he took this song and made it his own. So much passion. 4 those who haven’t heard him sing it please do. It’s so beautiful. His voice and the guitar playing are absolutely beautiful. IMHO this was diffidently a tribute 2 the group and its fans because it was a total treat 4 me. Damn I would love 4 Prince 2 release the music. Hopefully one day before I leave this world he will release his music on DVD/CD

Hope Prince mixed his cover of "Creep" with "The Air that I Breathe" by The Hollies, because that is what Radiohead themselves admit they were adopting/ripping with their own lyrics and structure. I remember hearing "Creep" back in 1994 and being puzzled that no one was talking of how it was a bit of a musical quote of that older brilliant song, "The Air That I Breathe". Creep is a boring, childish song by an incredible band that have rightfully retired it.
It's fitting that of all the Radiohead songs to pick from, Prince selected their oldest, best loved by the block-headed masses sing-along. Nothing like a fifty year old man bellowing out those teenage lyrics of angst. Yet he probably thinks he's being cutting edge or showing the kids he's still with it, not at all aware of how old the song is. Welcome back to 1994. I guess it hindsight it's fitting as 1994-1995 is the last time Prince walked in the world in musical relevance. I'll give him credit for stretching, though. I didn't think he could play live without going into tired Sly Stone tribute band mode. Larry Graham must have been busy that day and Little Brother got to play some rock music. No hard feelings.

Just going off what I saw on youtube (before it was taken down), it certainly wasn't a piss take. It had a similar vibe to the way he plays "Empty Room", "Joy In Repetition" and "Beautiful Strange" live. So it really wasn't that big of a stretch that some are claiming. Lol next you'll tell me that any thing Radiohead has done after Kid A is worth a damn. Creep is brilliant no matter what the hipsters try to make it out to be. Prince knows full well how old the song is.

LOL...( forget the fact that I dug the cover...)
Once again an example of heartfelt criticism from a Prince fan--"I really liked the "Creep" cover; But I wish he would stretch it out more like that live in terms of his setlist...He's been playing it safe in the bigger shows...And I could do without the dry Santana medley..." Now, an example of a bullshit shock poster who has officially become a caricature (no diss Wall....just the truth...you making the folks that are genuinely not afraid to speak out on this site look like assholes...)--- "It's fitting that of all the Radiohead songs to pick from, Prince selected their oldest, best loved by the block-headed masses sing-along. Please I can totally see the reason why he chose the song as people have already said here, but I thought the cover was rubbish tbh. It reminded me of Purple Rain Live in 1984 ie. double digit in length, except with Purple Rain being an epic made to last in such a way, Creep isn't and it dragged on and on. Plus the lyric changes weren't up to much either. Its like another artist covering "1999" and singing "Don't cha wanna go; 2009!", its not the same bloody song! If god one day struck me blind,
Your beauty i'd still see.

It's what happens when an aging pop star who is currently a religious zealot sings a song with 'dirty' words. I can just see Prince listening to the song with headphones, hoping Larry won't come in the room and ask what he's listening to. This is as risque' as Prince can get now; singing a song with four-letter words but leaving blank spaces where those words go, and in turn, receiving blank stares from people such as yourself.
