Prince Fans Brainwashed?

I think some people need to wake up and realize that different/new does not necessarily equate to bad. It's obvious that the purple one has one of the most expansive back catalogs of all time and also has some of the most memorable songs of all time in his repertoire. It's impossible to constantly live up to those standards, and that's not what Prince aims to do with new material. He wants to satisfy his creative mind, give the fans something to talk about and ultimately do his job.

It's one thing to accept this and be grateful that a legend approaching 50 is still coming out with regular, new and listenable material. I know we have all been blessed with perfection in the past, but you have to understand that Prince's recent albums are still better than 90% of the stuff doing the rounds on the charts. Planet Earth may not be Purple Rain, but it's certainly not Spirit by Leona Lewis either. If we continue these unfair and unrealistic comparisons, we're not only discrediting the work of a musician, but ruining the experience of music for ourselves and those around us at the org.

Not everything Prince touches will turn to gold. There are some dog awful recent songs out there, but the unhostility and insolence on these message boards is unbelievable at times. You need to give new things a chance without immediately dismissing them. I'm not saying that we can't have opinions, I'm just saying that they should be informed opinions. You hear a new song once and live and you're already off on tangents. For the love of dalmations, let the song at least have a chance to grow on you. Hearing a recording might help too, because live songs are largely unmemorable before you hear the actual release.

Please approach Prince's new material with an open mind, don't judge on the basis of past incidents or his old work. It's as if some of you would be happier for him to be dead. He can't do anything to please you.

And so he shouldn't. I'm just saying, it's getting a bit tired that people will find something wrong with every single move he makes. If it's not one thing, it's another.

If a superstar plays a song when no one's left to hear it, then is he still a superstar? This once lonely musician need not forget where he came from, where he is, and where he wants to be. Having class breeds gratitude and humility. As yet, fruits unknown.

At least he's doing something. If he just sat around trying to perfect everything to compete with himself from 20 years ago trying to meet with people's expectations, then he might not ever get anything out and he'd be a nervous wreck like MJ.

I dont know what ur post has to do with the title of ur thread, graffitibridge lol

But I love your post thumbs up!
I know exactly where you're coming from.
I was just saying something like this earlier.

How people rag on Prince what he's done lately and such.
I think the truth is that some people want Prince to act a certain way, play a certain genre, etc, etc. But they have an idea of him that's never going to pass. He can't please everybody and in all fairness, he writes music for himself. Always has, always will.
They're his musical talents and he'll do with them whatever he pleases. Nothing anyone's going to say is going to change the kind of music he writes.

But the trick is that he writes the music for himself, but he releases the albums for people to have something to listen to cool

You can twist this around and say that Prince is sabatoging his "star-quality" by giving his listeners lesser qualities of music all you want, but shouldn't you just be grateful he's releasing at all? At his age and after 30 years in the industry?

Thanks, I totally agree with what you're saying. Music is a method of expression and that is how it should be used.

And I'm not too sure with the title. I had an idea but the post didn't exactly match. lol Brainwashed by each other into thinking that all new Prince material is utter crap?

NO! I like your opinions and what you write!

Regardless of what I may feel/think/know/ or agree with, I can count on your opinion being your own, and one that you've actually researched, looked into and given good thought about and for, before launching into a tirade of self righteous and conceited opinions!!!!!

You know I'm joking on that bit????!!! wink

Stay with us Hun! It's nice to have someone that keeps that 'first listen' feeling fresh in their heads!!!!

I'd go for that nod
That's what it feels like lately confused
Like we're not allowed to LIKE his new material because its not what it used to be.
I'm not against people disliking Prince's new material, but they should stop trying to make everyone else agree with them rolleyes don't ruin the experience for us with the negativity. And if its as bad as you say, let us figure it out on our own lol

thanx hug
Getting posts like that from people makes me feel included in something wonderful cool
See, that's the kind of thing that makes Prince's fanbase like a 2nd family. We all support the same artist and in turn, support each other.

magnify It's hardly poor posture to expect a certain level of creativity and originality considering he wrote the book on it!!!!

People have always been saying Prince's career is over.

He's the master of amazing reinvention, pop wonder and use of various themes and images. For some it's not the expectation of 1999 part 2 but rather the same level of musical/metaphysical enchantment from his past musical milestones which is the strive for excellence... Only comparing it to today's current musical mediocrity is shallow and unexciting.

IMO his music/image/reinvention/pop formula in the past 7 years has been well planned, less dramatic and not had the powerful residual effects musically. I'd even argue stagnant, and playing it safe with the vintage vibe. Yes it's fun. And it's a different career move for a figure who is transformation. But let's not speak to soon as already another album is coming???

Excuses like: he's older now, he's single, he's more conservative, his testosterone level's dropped, etc, Means nothing. umbrella

It's what we don't know that is also exciting.. what other projects/music are going on, completed, or halted? His networking and business contacts in the industry, what's been stalled, green-lighted or canceled? Wasn't there a 3121 movie idea? He's historically been so involved in things...for many we only see thru a little hole. pc: with the release of a certain genre album while 3 other projects were shelved.

Oh get over it. He's an artist. The moment he puts his work out there, it's open to criticism.

However, one of Prince's more recent moves is to try & control what is said about him & his work. If you think there's nothing wrong with that, then it's you who has been brainwashed.
