It seems a lot of the posts on here are saying they're not going to be fans anyomre because Prince has dared to:

Not allow his performance at Coachella to be streamed
Play Coaschella (according to non-fans Portishead)
Not release all of his music
Release terrible music
Not release a DVD
Release the Vegas DVD
Give away his album
Not give away his music
Not do as Trent Reznor does
He just follows the true trendsetters
Take his videos off YouTube
Make terrible videos
Create and take down his own fan sites.
Fight with fan-sites

What else?

Also, Prince has been doing these "shenanigans" for years.

So why, really, truly, do these non-fans still follow Prince? Isn't there anyone else to follow? Really? And, puh-leeze, no answers saying "well I'm hoping he'll be the 'old" Prince."

im proud of Prince for being himself and maybe others on here should start to as well. i have a great appretiation for the way in which he approaches his music and how much of his life he chooses to disclose (which i think really is none of our business).

oh, and one more thing.... Thank You to Prince! Someone who doesnt get enough credit on a website created to supposedly appretiate the artist for his work. AND One individual who will inspire many generations of true artists a.k.a. those who actually know how to play instruments and create their own music.

Being a Prince fan can be frustrating as hell, sometimes - we all know this. But credit where it's due... he *always* marches to the beat of his own drum. He's done it since day one and is still doing it today... isn't that one of the reasons why so many of us admire him?


I'm starting to wonder whether Prince's (apparent) withdrawal from the internet, and his lack of presence on sites like youtube, etc., is an attempt to go back to 'old school' values... where he was in control of his imagery and his mystique. Back in the 80's, Prince was such an otherworldly character; he was remote, fascinating and inaccessible, almost. How often did he give interviews? Hardly ever. For the longest period, a lot of fans didn't even know what his speaking voice was like! He let his music do the talking. These days, we know what celebrities had for breakfast, what underwear they're wearing... blah blah blah. I think Prince *does* want to control image rights, etc.; but maybe he wants a return to 'old star' values. The more we see of him, the more normal and familiar he becomes. And I don't think Prince ever wants to be seen as normal.


Back in the day, if you caught one of his tv appearances, you were lucky. Youtube didn't exist to flash it all over the world minutes later. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that site and find his lack of internet presence frustrating, sometimes - but maybe this is Prince's way of re-building that mystery. A 'you had to be there' sorta thing. It gives all his live appearances and tv spots a certain cachet, perhaps. The less we see of him, the more we'll want. And the more it leads to 'legendary' status.

And how dare a fan have a dissenting opinion? Or think that as good as musician as he might be, as good a songwriter as he might have been, that Prince is capable of being an asshole?

In the real world, people can like & dislike the same for different reasons.

As I say, don't get me wrong, I'd love to go on youtube and see his videos, old tv clips, etc etc etc.. It stokes the fan 'flames' and, if anything, is the perfect introduction to newer fans as to why Prince matters so much as an artist. The amount of times I've typed in the names of some of my favourite bands and viwed never-before-seen footage... It's like a fan's wet dream.

But I do wonder whether Prince is sick of this celebrity-saturated culture. Maybe - after tinkering around with the internet - he realises its' potential, will use it to his own advantage, and perhaps revert to that mysterious figure so many fans loved. It's not as if he's in every single magazine as it is; but maybe he feels youtube and similar sites lead to overload. Who knows??
