Into the light: a forgotten little gem?

Right now i have this song from Chaos and Disorder on repeat (well, its short, so that is easy.. lol). I think this is probably one of Princes best ballads from the nineties!

The playing by the band is so splendid (both tight and swinging at the same time). The NPG around that time were surely a 'special thing'! Princes piano lines sound so intricate and his vocals contrast so fine with those of Rosies.

This kind of songs (the BIG ballad / musical-type of music) have the danger to turn sappy and bombastic (like what happened with Arms of Orion and Graffiti Bridge), but the inspired playing by the band, the arrangement and especially Rosies hearttugging background vocals and the saxophone solo prevend this song from going into 'kitsch-terrority'.

Overal,, i think it really is a little gem: splendid musicianship, well thought out arrangement, the main problem of the song (of course..) it is way too short.

I think when it would have been longer (another verse, chorus, chorus) after the saxophone solo) it could have been one of his best ballads ever.

What are you opinions on this song?

Haystack

I really love it, but if it was any longer, it would sound far too much like something Meatloaf would do as part of Bat Out Of Hell VIII.

I totally love that song! A little piece of perfection. IMO, Chaos & Disorder is underrated.

You have a point there, haystack... lol

I mean it could have turned into some over the top anthem, with some bombastic guitar solo near the end.

Or not... we will never know. biggrin

I agree with you, VenusBlingBling.

When it comes to Prince albums from the second half of the nineties i mostly listen to Chaos and Disorder and The Vault.
The songwriting may not be as great as on his albums from the eighties, but the musicianship and the 'playing fun' is so much ore obvious on those albums then on way too slick and 'plastic' sounding Emancipation, New Power Soul and Rave.
