I hope not.

This festival generally has a crowd that is largely unaware of Prince's greatness. He should slam it all by himself and with the band, of course.

Exactly. Surprise guests would be lost on this audience. As he's not allowing it to be seen by fans who cannot make it, there's little point.

Unless he thinks he can't dazzle on his own?

From what I see, the Dr Funkenberry site is an entertainment site. They report on American Idol for goodness sake! Nothing Princely about that whether he was on the show or not! Plus I've seen other items that have nothing to do with Prince so I wouldn't go so far to call it Prince's spokesperson. lol

I would respectfully disagree. Compare it to.. say Perez Hilton or some other entertainment site. It is highly unusual. I mean c'mon!... 'DR'... 'Funk' ...'n' ...'berry'
Apart from the 'n' I would believe these all to be quite, emm.. princey!
And he did use an 'n' once as well. Can't remember in which song.

But in the end, does it really matter? Just as long as news on Prince comes out, I don't care if Oscar the Grouch gives it to us just as long as I find out what's happening with Prince.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Franchise

Copy that on the Dap Kings! I went to my local music store, which I will always support instead of itunes and others, and they turned me on to the Dap Kings when I asked about Amy Winehouse, they played me a CD sampler that had one of their songs and I was hooked! Had to have the cd! If they were to play with Prince it would be his best guest since the Time opened for him at the Musicology shown in Oakland!

I have to agree with you about Sharon & the Dap Kings, love their sound. I just became a new fan of their music. Sharon's a true, soul singer and her band has that 60s, JB soul sound, and it's no wonder, since she is from James Brown hometown of Augusta, GA. Sista burns a hole in the floor when she performs.I definitely would love to see them live. I hope Coachella airs their performance.

Ledisi - She will be performing on the Tonight Show tomorrow and at Coachella with P.

You know, a lot of people on the east coast kind of make a big deal out of Ledisi. I've heard her sing, but not crazy about it. She has a nice voice, and I guess I could put her in the same category as Angie Stone, but that's about it.
[Edited 4/25/08 9:56am]

Phew! I thought it was just me. I just can't get into her.

where were all these people when "people that know about funk" were diggin them back in 2000-2001 ?
I guess they needed the AMY CRACKHOUSE connection to get hip to what was out there....?!?! strange...eek
[Edited 4/25/08 12:37pm]

What's hard to believe about it really? Nothing strange about it. I've heard of them for a while, but never got a chance to really get into them, life happens. There's no requirement stating that everyone discovers particular artists at the same time, and it also depends on what you're into at the time. I say to each its own.

I mean she has a nice voice and I don't want to put her down or anything. But on the East Coast I hear her mentioned all the time. I saw her perform on some show not too long ago, and just wasn't that thrilled by her style. Who knows? Maybe if I hear her out a few times, it will catch on. lol

Yeah, that would be a very good surprise to me.

But of course I don't think many people would know one way or the other. But I'm sure that many would enjoy the sound, even if they don't recognize the face. And it would be great exposure for her.

And Ledisi has opened for Chaka Khan and attended UC Berkley, so he's almost certainly been made aware of her.

Actually I was trying not to sound sarcastic about it as well, and apologize if I did.

Okay, I just went back and read your post. I'm late on knowing of the Dap Kings, but they do sound good.

A lot of people, at least here on the East Coast, seem to be familiar with her. So is she known because she's been a backup singer for many well-known artists? I'm just wondering or at least trying to catch up with those who know of her.

2 add 2 what I said above... it could be the Cloud guitar. Could be Sly Stone, who knows? If it's a performer, I don't want another guitar player up there at all... even Santana (unless they R trading licks on one song, with Sheila E on Timbales!!!)

Based on what I sampled of the Dap Kings, that would be a funk showdown for sure.

Soooo... Long live Amy Winehouse! It is getting rather thin at the moment with the Duffy's and Adeles, but hey, rather this be a hype and getting some buzz around Daptone, than Britney clones.

I really don't understand your beef. You're not new to this game, why lash around when your type of music is getting some exposure. I do understand when something you love is trashed for the sake of commerce, but it's not like Amy is the sell-out here.
