Yes. I know!!! I think I've been one of those orgers who has posted a few times about the awesomeness of this track. It could be my favorite on the album. It is soo sooooo tight in so soooo many ways. Incredible.

It's one of his songs I can have on play all day long, while doing other things - the repetitive background beats [for lack of a better term? - I'm no musician...] lend themselves well to it.
I love it. | |

My God, this thing just played up on my iPod and it really caught me. Is it not the Jam!? It's baptist Church long but flows so well that you don't notice its darn near 10 minutes. This is one of those flawless songs, to me. And the video isn't bad either. it´s automatic... love the video,

Ah yes, one of the great songs from Prince's most productive period. There was a dark, sinister, New Wave/Goth/Synth-Pop feel to it that I loved. I think that was why a lot of my Goth friends liked this track. Plus it's funky as hell.
But this was the New Wave side of Prince that I loved. NEW WAVE!!!! NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Yeah, bangin' song. I've written threads about this cut in the past. An edited down version of this easily could have been a single on formats that catered to new wave in the early 80's. P has so much going on in the instrumentation. He's got the the little rock guitar playing the hook melody. That's countered by the keyboard lick. Then he's got the strings. But what I dig the most is how he's got a bass keyboard holding it down while he's thumping and popping on the bass guitar above it all. This is definately an O.G. track. The only people that u heard bumping this back in 82 were real P fans. Like myself,in 82, I hardly ever played Little Red Corvette or even the title track once the album was released. The cuts I played were this, Lady Cab Driver, Something In The Water, All The Critics, Free and International. The unedited video of this is cool. Jill and Lisa look so damn good in this it's STOOPID! Like I said, should have been a single. Instead of Let's Pretend We're Married, which I never really dug.
As a kid, I used to play the part of Lisa and J.J moaning and crying over P's guitar solo to girls all the time. Just to see how they would respond. They would be like " They sound weird....Why are they crying?". My favorite part is towards the end where P is going off on the bass guitar and then it sounds like a space ship has landed. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I was surprised to learn that Automatic was never a single. But Let's Pretend was? I mean, that's an okay track, but nothing is really going on in it. Its sorta filler. The best part is that "fuck the taste out of your mouth" bit, but thats not worth having been released as a single.

Automatic is such a strong track and has WAAAAY more going on that let's pretend. Automatic is the baddest track on 1999, to me, anyway.
