What's wrong with Purple Rain? besides the blonde waitress that couldn't act worth a damn
the red jump suit that the club owner wore, looking like a big 'ol pitcher of koolaid (remember the old koolaid commercial, he use to say,"Oh, yea!!") and the fact that the 20th anniversary dvd doesn't have any bloopers. i would have loved to have seen some of the mistakes the cast made.

To be fair, the rest of the cast wasn't exactly made up of Streeps and Pacinos.

And still, when it was on tv a few months ago, I kept watching it til the end.

Don't get me wrong, I love the movie!!! Especially the performances at the club. And how sexy Prince looks (at the lake, when the sunlight hits his eyes, so sexy) And how funny Morris and Jerome are. I watched it this weekend and everytime that waitress is just unbearable to watch. [Edited 4/17/08 12:00pm]

She is pretty bad, that is for sure. For me, though, the single worst part is always when The Kid asks Apollonia where she's from and she says, "New Orleans." Grates on my nerves something fierce.

I like Purple Rain, know the movie line for line. (I always imitate Apollonia's parts--except for the Lake Minnetonka bit of course) and today, I even wore my PR button!
the movie rocks! I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me. Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots. Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol. Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol. Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

There's nothing wrong with Purple Rain - it's perfect just the way it is!

I always go back to thinkin' that there's no way a 26 year old could have been doing any better in 1984/5.
Imagine what "Purple Rain" would have been today if Prince as a 49 year old man was putting it together? Prince's Age and money put that musical perfect for how it came to be. It is a classic...And I bet those guys never thought it would be...But it really is...I am so proud of Prince, his band, and everyone in the movie for it's success. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I find nothing wrong with Purple Rain.
The only problem I have is I played the album to death between 1984 and 1987. I find nowadays it is the album of Prince's that I rarely listen to. I play D&P, , Black, Sign O the Times, and Gold the most. When I get nostalgic then its Controvery and 1999, and the B-sides. And I get moods of Batman, ATWIAD, Parade, and Emancipation. But Purple Rain I find is stuck in a time bubble and I am find leaving it there, I would rather here the new stuff to be honest. And live I would only want to here The Beautiful Ones. I would trade Lets Go Crazy, Doves, and Purple Rain, for Mountains, Last December(I think one of Prince's best songs), Love 2 the 9's (Prince could clean it up a little, jam longer, it still would be fun). Trust me, i love it too!!! I try to watch it every week or at least anything prince dvd that I have. I had a four day weekend, and had a prince marathon. I watched rave, live in las vegas, 2004 musicology tour in LA, and purple rain. I have got to get Under the cherry moon, graffiti bridge, SOTT, Lovesexy and Purple Rain Tour. I was thinking about getting the hits dvd, too. But people say it doesn't have as many videos as you think, but i don't care. I LOVE HIM!!! People say the same thing about Live in Vegas because it was actually like a two hour show or something and there are a lot of songs he performs that didn't go on the dvd. I like it anyway, especially when he sings gotta broken heart again. He sung it so passionately to me, like he was going through it at the moment. I cry everytime I hear it.

Many years ago a friend of mine asked some girl if she was ok as she was crying. He was a little lost and was looking for directions and saw this girl sat outside a trailer. Turned out it was Appelonia and he'd stumbled upon the set of PR.
I can't verify it but he sure wasn't the kind of bloke that lied about things. He said she was very attractive. He couldn't comment on the mighty fine breasts or the horrendous acting.

Keep things in perspective... apart from Olga Karlatos and Clarence Williams, not many (if any) of the rest of the cast had ever acted before. They went through classes prior to filming, but some had "it" naturally (Morris, Jerome) and some didn't. Jill Jones (the waitress) is arguably the most talented singer to emerge from P's camp. She's just not a born actress (at least she wasn't back then -- I doubt she was more than 20-21 years old at the time too). You can definitely see a difference in her acting abilities between PR and Graffiti Bridge (what little time she had on screen in GB). Regardless, PR wasn't about great acting... it was about a musical moment (and movement) captured in time on celluloid. I don't think many people were paying attention to the acting (when it was released). P had been building steam for years prior to that and the summer of 84 was his explosion (no guitar-stroking pun intended). For the most part, the story that Blinn and Magnoli wrote actually kept people interested throughout the movie (not just filler between live performances) -- especially for the time period that it was released (there were some pretty bad movies all over the big screen in 84). Anyway, don't let the sub-par acting of a few people ruin the movie for you. Besides, we got the treat of Morris and Jerome to make up for anything remotely bad in that movie.
