Compare and CONtrast your FAVORITE Ballad to your LEAST favorite Ballad Go!
mine: favorite: If I was Ur Girlfriend. I love this song cause there's no ballad ever that has ever come close to it. It's weird, quirky, perverse, and sincere all in one bundle. Least favorite: Call My Name It's constructed perfectly , I'm sure. But it just irks me. I can't even listen to it for more than 10 or 15 seconds. It almost sounds like Prince-by-numbers.

Favorite: When 2 R in Love
It's sweet, charming, sexy, and lovely and has wonderful harmony. Least: Friend/Lover/Mother/Piece of Shit It's vile.

Favourite - SCANDALOUS!
It's has all the key elements of a LOve song! Smooth, sexy, erotic, sensual, innocent, suggestive, emotional - it's just beautiful! The orchestration, the pace, Princes vocals and the range he uses - I Love it!!!! I'm finding it hard to think of one I seriously don't like so may have to re-visit, but Twiki's definitely right with Friend/lover/sister/mother/fucker!!! It is definitely a forced piece of insincere vomit inducing tripe!!! I can only imagine he pissed Mayte off and he wrote it like some forced apology!!! Bleugh!!! Sorry. (To be fair, I hate Let's Have a Baby almost as much. Pretty much all the ballads from Emancipation I hate, except for Dreamin' About U, Curious Child, and Soul Sanctuary.) [Edited 4/25/08 9:20am]

I'm a lover of his ballads and slow stuff - it was the subject of my very first thread - but Emancipation is the worst for them, except I can't make you love me, Betcha by golly wow, and La,la,la means I love you..... but he didn't write those! It could be the reason the marriage didn't work out. If I were Mayte, I would've been pissed. "You mean to tell me Susannah got Adore, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Forever in My Life, and Crucial, and I get this crap? Hit the road, creep!"

favorite - The Beautiful Ones
Fit so perfectly on the album, unlike any of his ballads before or since in my mind, plus I'm a sucker for the Linn drum. Screaming included, and it's sincere and not forced (see "The Dance" album version...it's just not faayah!) least favorite - Graffiti Bridge I know what the idea here was...a song written and performed in the style of old-school musicals...but oh. my. goodness. I just found it so completely contrived and sappy, so serious about itself, and a retread of songwriting (Free, Purple Rain, The Ladder). I just cannot stand it. Everybody else must be looking for Graffiti Bridge cuz I'm just looking for the skip button. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife.
