This was brilliant. Short, raw, in your face. The studio cut is overproduced, glossy, keys too high in the mix, bass mixed way to loud and it digitally clips the song. He does this way too often on guitar tracks such as Endorphin, Dolphin, etc. All 3 have live performances that rank up there with the best. I like the studio version, and at times it even reminds me of the 'Dirty Mind' era. If we had heard that version first, and THEN the SNL version, we would have appreciated the SNL version as much as we do now, but the studio version would have more appreciation if it was heard first. In terms of what I bolded above.. Look what happens next... he records the 'Planet Earth' album, which was recorded and mixed nearly the opposite of '3121', with guitars up front, clarity and breath between the different instruments, etc... and most folks here hate it. Go figure. But now... back 2 my thread... Yeah, Planet Earth is a real rock album, all right. Those guitars up front knock me back everytime. The crunch and power of Lion of Judah and Resolution are unlike anything the rock world has experienced in the past. Oh, that's right, you're the one who claimed before it came out it was going to be a real rock record. In terms of the Fury performance, it reminds one and all of why Prince is worth paying to see live -- if you can stomach the greatest hits act for the billionth time -- and why when it comes to recording a rock song, he has absolutely not clue on how to pull it off -- guitars "up front" or not. It also shows how pathetic the man's music has been in the last decade or so -- a live performance which is inspired, by all means -- but isn't that the whole point of music and performing? -- has to be hailed as a landmark moment in his recent career. No hard feelings.

Yep. It's definately one of his best TV performances ever, and one of the first things I show to people who question my fandom. Once they see it, most are stumped for a comeback
It's such a shame they didn't use this as the official promo video for the song instead of that cheap-ass thing they quickly whipped up a few days later that just looks like a pale imitation. I love the little look he gives when the song finishes, just before he runs off - like he's thinking "now I know you didn't see that coming!" . Love this version. I have it ripped to my ipod instead of the studio version.
The man can kick ass live, always has, always will. As far as guitar work goes, its outta sight.

Question for the guitar players..I'll give someone a purple cookie if they can tell me what that "on and off" toggle switch effect is at the end of his guitar solo (on the SNL "Fury" performance). Still have no clue what it is. I don't think it's a BOSS Tremelo/Vibrato pedal.

Brits 2006? Yeah, it was alright, but the "Fury" part kind of got lost in the medley. The SNL version was just raw, complete, in your face, and completely unexpected [Edited 4/18/08 15:09pm] Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

this is perfect. i have this vid in my vault... completely perfect in EVERY way...
he was in such a good mood that night & this reflected the performance. he looked he hammered the heck out the guitar he pulls an x-rated face & rocked his guitar in2 submission. i turn 2 mush every time i watch...open mouthed...breathless... i love how he kinda humps it a little at the end 2 get that stuttering effect. stunning the beautiful loved & blessed performance deserves a prop or 2 also.

i would say it's the whammy pedal by GuitarTechs man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Don't get to see SNL here, so i've never seen the video of this, but the mp3 of this performance is an absolute favorite of mine - the guitar is stunning and it sounds like he's having a total blast. I've got a copy of him doing this live on the Brits, but this SNL version sounds so much better - the guitar playing is absolutely magic. I'd love to see a good quality version of this one day

Fury was a good performance, but my absolute favorite TV appearances happen to also be from SNL. Partyup(whatabadass) and Electric Chair(offthefukkinchain). If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I posted in another thread that I do not own Planet Earth, after really not liking 3121, the songs, production, etc. I didn't like the song Guitar as much as others on this board. So I wouldn't be able to speak on the production of Planet Earth. But until he rocks my world again with a studio cut, I am not buying anymore new albums. I used to give him a pass and buy everything, but to be frank there are better things to buy than 3121 like albums. But again I would pay big money to see him live, cause there he has never disapointed me. And I hang out here daily so it's not like I have disowned him. Music is the best...
