WOW
Great thread! Maybe the most underrated song he officially released. People were so hyped for this pairing of Prince & Madonna as both were still in their 80's heyday. Prince had slipped a little in popularity post Under the Cherry Moon and with the Lovesexy cover, but he was still talked about and Alphabet St was pumpin out of peoples cars that summer of '88.

Then Madonna returns to her natural coloured hair, grows it long, and sings "Like a Prayer" with a burning cross! Awesome! Then the album drops with a duet with Prince on it! Amazing they didn't make a video and release a single, but the song IS kinda odd.

But the more you listen the more it grows and I find it to be a gem. I turn people on to it all the time, who have NO idea they ever recorded together. As was usual back then, all production by Prince, but this was no instant Pop classic, this is a darkly funny, slow-burn number. One of my all time favorites and I'm SURE not what Warner Bros was expecting/hoping for AT ALL!!! LOL!

ditto, its a discovery song, i was on it when it dropped and your right people did not know then. i rediscover it every 2 years. now it's on my ipod and it still gets lost LOL, but when i hear it i think this shit is hot. had it come as a purple rain B side with synths instead of horns it would have been judged as a classic.

OMG ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!

Always have since the day of the release of Madonnas album.

Prince had so much more to do with the Like a prayer album than just this duet as well!

One of my favourite Prince duet/collabarations there is!

biggrin biggrin

my favorite part is the last line, when Madonna sounds pissed off as she sings..

Don't try to tell me what your enemies taught you
I'm gone! But I just want you to know...

Me too!

I also like the bit that sounds like "don't fu@k my mind!" when the lyric is actually "don't fog my mind!"

Immense track. Apparently neither of them were in the studio together to record this. They just sent tapes back and forth between Paisley and wherever Madonna was...
I seem to remember Madonna saying the reason it sounds so weird and disjointed is because she's playing keys on it.

it is pure prince indeed but kinda bland and it lacks
a really memorable melody or chorus, imo.

Why would Madonna credit Prince with something she wrote?
(she writes most of her own lyrics, and usually co-writes the music)

Highschool, madly in awe with Prince, friend had bought that particular Madonna album, I taped the song, listened to it and was like

And it never changed.
Can it be called a song?

I love this song too. the part you mention:

"embrasse moi. what? pour la derniere fois."
means, kiss me. (what?) for the last time

I think it's from an interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show, circa 2004 - 2005

That's exactly how I'd describe it.

And unfortunately it's the weakest song on an otherwise perfect album! sad
