"Planet Earth" - The Positive

I was just listening to this album again...it's been a while...and I can't help but PRAISE the greatness of this record. There are so many fantastic songs on this record, powerful songs, funky songs and fun songs!

When I first bought it the only song I already heard was the infectious "Guitar", I was ready for something, anything but as usual I wasn't sure what to expect.

My first reaction was a feeling towards the strange due to the opening title track Planet Earth. It's such a serious song in tone, sound and lyric...beautiful but almost haunting. Then the song flows to Guitar, Somewhere Here On Earth and then to The One U Want 2 C. So at 1st it was a strange transition in my opinion. All GREAT songs but a strange flow mix none the less.

But as I listened to this album more I appreciate it and love it even more. The music is stellar. Man!!! Future Baby Mama is classic PRINCE without it being too much of a copy of classic Prince. Mr. Goodnight is fun, playful, cute and excellent.

Lion of Judah, Resolution and All the Midnights In The World are BRILLIANT! Those 3 songs alone are far more superior to anything on "alternative" radio today. And Guitar and The One U Want 2 C show why PRINCE is still an incredible pop song writer. Catchy hooks, fun beats, nice compositions and pure Prince magic.

Planet Earth is EXCELLENT!

I actually played the record for someone and they bought their own copy because of it, so yes, the album does have its dawn points.

I'm tired of repeating the same negative things about this album again and again. This time, I'm only going to focus on the positive things.

Here we go:

1. The title track has an epic quality to it with a very strong hook. The sparse use of piano throughout gives it a haunting sound, and the anthem-like chorus makes it feel epic. The guitar solo at the end is very climactic, and Prince's vocals sound fairly passionate.

2. Guitar is a fun ditty. It's good to see light hearted songs like this where Prince has some fun with the material.

3. Somewhere Here On Earth is a beautiful ballad. Everything from the scratchy record effect in the background to the relaxing smooth jazz evokes a retro atmosphere of a man in a suit sipping expensive wine while looking at the stars.

4. The One U Wanna C is proof of his pop sensibilities. The track flows with playfulness and a continuous hook reminiscent of I Wanna Take The Place Of Your Man minus, of course, the angst.

And there we have it.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I'm always positive about this album razz
No matter how it gets on everyone's nerves, it doesn't stop me.

The title track just sounds really polished, like he'd worked out every detail from the sequencing, to each note sung or played, and of course, the amazing guitar at the end.
During the instrumental break, I could just tell that I was in for a treat. (At the time, I had gone through some albums that I didn't get along with at first... I was very discouraged, thinking that a lot of his work really was an acquired taste... having an easy album to love was what I'd been dying for).

Guitar & The One u wanna c... both had me tapping my foot and just wanting to get up and dance. It'd been a while since I'd heard a song from any artist that instilled that reaction in me.

Somewhere here on Earth was a treat... cool classic piano ballad that sounded like it could have been recorded in the 1940's. If he did a whole album with tracks of this genre, it'd be one of my favorites. cloud9

There are a couple of other things I'd like to add, but I'm just gonna leave it at this for now.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I'm too lazy to type my own opinion...so let me just quote someone who comes close.
Same here, minus number 2. guitar makes my skin peel. Otherwise, I agree 75%

Planet Earth is as big as it's Title proclaims!

Planet Earth is big but not as big as planet Jupiter, however it is bigger than planet Venus, (but only just). That being said Earth and Venus are rock planets where as Jupiter is a gas giant. So on a positive note Planet Earth is bigger than Planet Venus.

I was surprised when I heard Chelsea Rogers, I love old funk Disco. The rest of the album was okay for me for a month or two. Now its completely under my skin, I think it is absolutely Wonderful, Fantastic and going by Undetected by Radio. "Im The One U Wanna C" Is A HIT SONG for sure. Better than anything else I'm hearing on the Radio right now...

Thanks Prince For Another Great Album!

Yes. I love the whole CD and I think many overlooked PE which is truly a beautiful and strong melody that builds to a crescendo, takes your hand and invites you to join the journey.

I agree generally with this post, though I'd also say all of the above tracks aren't essential Prince by any means and are only highlights because they're on yet another sub-par release from Prince.

The second half of the record is atrocious and the last two tracks are laughable and pedestrian. I'm amazed Prince had no sense of just how vanilla they sound; they're as bland as anything I've ever heard on any pop album.
No hard feelings.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Yeah, think its a good album, the best out of the Mcology,3121 and PE trilogy and prob his best since Emancipation.

Its a very vocally strong work.

PE - reminds me a bit of the For You album in the falsetto part. I like the way he is acknowledging his older style too.

There are also a few D and P sounding riffs in the album too.

I like the overall sound and theme/message, P seems more thoughful but fun at the same time and the production is a vast improvement on his last two albums.
