Musicians: Have you ever covered a Prince song? Yep, last year me and my now defunct band did a killer cover of "Computer Blue" at this club in NYC. Of course nothing beats the original, but we tried to do it as much justice as possible. I even tried to use the best possible guitar effects that matched my hero's.
And then at the end I did the hysterical scream then threw my guitar down to run offstage. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

One of my old bands used to do a heavy funk metal version of "Bambi". We had a female lead singer (who went both ways in real life) and people thought it was our own tune. When I told them it was an old P song they couldn't believe it.
I've done a few obscure ones on my own but I'll never play them for anyone. Did them for my own amusuement.

I've never actually covered a Prince song at a show, but when I go to music stores to try out guitars or amps, I play "When You Were Mine", "Peach", or "Endorphinmachine". I'm thinking about getting a Telecaster (a Fender...not a Hohner), so I played "Guitar" on one just to see if I remembered the chords.

When I play solo guitar/trumpet at resturants or weddings, I play a lot of Prince ballads. Hardly anyone recognises them, but it's great when you do get someone coming up to you later who recognised them and giving you some praise. P fans are cool like that - you never know where they're lurking!! Plus the soul/funk covers band I'm in do "Kiss" (which I stole the arrangement from the RNRHOF performance), and we used to do "Sexy MF" with me doing the rap - serious! Yeah, I've mentioned this on here a few times before. There's a documentary about the Black Rock Coalition and my band at that time, Amalgam, was featured in it. The gig that they showed of us playing, "Bambi" was in the set. That's the only time I ever did a cover of P's songs. There's footage of me getting interviewed at the end of the gig and the cat asked me about playing Bambi because he dug it. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Years ago, I was in a 80's cover band doing the hotel circuit. We did Housequake, Sexy MF, 1999, some Sheila E and Time tunes. Large band with horns. I was the bass player.

Yeah, we do a medley of Controversy & Mutiny. It's much more of a rock style than Prince's versions, and we added some funky JB style changes just to make it interesting. It was like a lesson for the band.
We also did Little Red Corvette, but much like the original, nothing very interesting, just a good cover song. We've also talked about doing Cream, Sexy MF, U Got the Look, If I was the Man IN Your Life (!), [Edited 4/16/08 11:21am] My Legacy

I played "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" at a country jam session.
Of course, I didn't know it was a COUNTRY jam session when I went, but screw it. I came to play "ICNTTPOYM" and that was what I played.

On the same topic....I'm curious to know what Prince songs are the most intricate to cover ( technically) and which ones are good for beginners ?
