Prince's playing, as always, is outstanding -- unfortunately what he is playing is the problem.
- JD It's cool you feel that way about his songs and speculate on the reasons behind it, but I don't understand the part in bold. As long as I've known Prince, after Purple Rain he became a superstar, multi-millionare and celebrity. Your stating that as if he just came into new found money and is hanging out with celebrities for the first time. I've always thought that was his life since he became famous. I've heard of her too, she's on my page. Nice 'fro. I also love Leela James voice. The sista is bad. Apparently Ledisi has been around because I keep hearing people mentioning her name on the East Coast. Apparently she has a large following. Okay, so I honestly like the song and I thought he was awesome. The lyrics are as follows (as far as I could make out):
You don't really know me You just think you do It's against the law in 13 states What I wanna do to you Turn me loose If you really love me You got to give me what I need You get your stuff and get out Cause I make you bleed Turn me loose The board behind your head About to split in 2 Whatever's holding up this bed Will be here when I'm through Turn me loose If you love these blankets You better throw them on the floor The weather girl's a friend of mine She said "when it rains it pours" Oh baby, you gotta turn me loose Check me (guitar solo) You don't understand I don't do this nightly But if I did it once you'll want me 2 more than likely Oh baby, you gotta turn me loose I'm too hard to handle We can never be more than friends Speaking of which, you need to learn how to dance or I'll never come back again turn me loose Renato, speak brother (keyboard solo)

The song was not that bad. I feel like some people are still childishly upset about the closing of some websites. He had every right to do that
People, this is Prince, he is like this - he does not have to prove after 30 years in business that he can be genius in creating new styles and perfetct pop and funk. He needs inspiration and hopefully has before releasing a new album and you can be sure that this will not be the best song on his upcoming album (even if it's on it), but at this point this is his music. He just sent his "message" - and a lot of people just have to face it that they don't like his messages anymore. they are not sexy, controversial, innovative anymore I am sure that he can deliver a good album in 2008 and maybe he just should turn back to jazz again, because JB style funk is not that great to hear anymore - it is time to go ahead with jazz (this means no media exposure) or with a decent rock album (but we know that he never does what we most want him to deliver). Why I like his jazzy efforts? Because he is more focused on one style on these albums - if he only did a 100% rock or soul or funk (like Black Album) or r&b album he would be still great. But he is like a kaleidoscope - newer know what scene or structure comes next. The realistic scenario is that he will release a Musicology-3121-PE style album with 2-3 reaaly perfect songs on it in 2008/2009 and will tour - touring is the only thing that brings in cash these days.

After Purple Rain and even as late as the Hit & Run Tour, Prince and band would drop into relatively unknown clubs and play for whomever came out. Now it seems like much of what he is doing caters to primarily the Hollywood set. I am just wondering if he is out of touch (as evidenced by some prety weak lyrics on his last few albums). As a side note, I was just listening to The Gold Experience -- what a brilliant album !! - JD

First of all - THANK YOU to a certain Orger!! Much appreciated.
Secondly - I know some people want Prince to release nothing but musical miracles each and every time but... what the hell is wrong with some of you??! It's funky, upbeat, catchy... what more do you need?! Prince's guitar playing... Renato... And it's great to see the entire band clearly enjoying themselves.

murph said: Wow...well, at least we got all the expected glowing reviews and kill-joy inspired gripes on the Org...I don't know what's funnier? Reading folks say that the song and Leno performance was grade A funk (u guys really don't believe that? do you?) or Reading folks crucify Prince for putting "another nail in his creative coffin.." (Really Wall?...lol)...
Look, I'll be the first to say that this was a lighthearted performance that broke NO new ground...But I'll be happy when Prince fans can just take a 50 year old artist for what he/she is...Is "Turn Me Loose" a great song? No...I've heard better from him over the past 15 years...A lot better...But all of this talk about how he needs Wendy & Lisa (another blast from the past gripe...and frankly stale) or that he's "dampening his legacy" and showing that his run from 1980-87" was in hindsight not genius, put the work of a talented pop star (Again Wall, really?...lol) is some of the most laughable stuff I've read on this board in a minute... I'm usually the one that says folks should be able to say whatever they want on the Org...Hell, if we can't criticize or dissect Prince's work or actions, that would be a boring ass site...Hell, it would be a cult, something that I'm not fucking down with one bit...I've even been blasted for criticizing Prince on this site...But some of the comments I'm reading are coming from a different and desperate place... There is a difference between level headed criticism and shock posting...I mean let's be real...Ten years ago, Prince was looked at as a great artist who had gone into obscurity...He could only sell out small venues and rarely got any love on national television or music discussions...Which makes me think that a lot of the folks that are doing the extreme revisionist history are going into convulsions over the fact that Prince has become a media favorite...That has to be the reason that folks have taken the criticism to new heights...LOL... Motherfuckers have become fortunetellers...These folks will tell you how Prince is going to play the same ol' boring show at todays festival (Damn...silly me...I thought his live performances was the reason he has gotten back into the good graces of the genreal public and old school Prince heads)... I'll say it again...I'm glad we can speak our minds on the Org...But let's do it within reason and not just to do the same ol shock post BS...It's getting a little lame and predictable on both sides from the "Fams" (I hate that term...it creeps me out) to the haters (when you bring up shit that has nothing to do with a particular topic, then yes that's good ol fashion hate..)...The sky is not falling...It is what it is...A man getting on in years, who seems comfortable in his own skin...And a bunch of fans wishing that it was 1987 again...What's new? I'm talking about composition, songwriting. When he says Turn Me Loose "isn't even a song," I assume that's what he's talking about. Days of Wild, Lady Cab Driver, When Doves Cry are barely songs themselves, and yet they're classics (maybe not Days of Wild). Prince has been doing it forever. The entire Black Album is barely songs, hell even Purple Rain is barely a song. My Legacy

Damn, I missed it, and thanks to Prince being such a prick with the internet, I guess that means I'll have to wait a long time to hear the song.
For the sake of this discussion, though, can we please qualify what the hell we mean by the definition of a song? I heard someone say Purple Rain is barely a song, and well, that just plain doesn't make sense. So, what do we mean by "song" anyway? Is the new song lacking a bridge, hook, or proper chorus? I'm confused here. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
