New topic PrintableJust saw the performance, short as it was - My brief thoughts are as follows!
- Song was good, but generic, if that makes sense. Nothing special, but still groovable. As a single, it'd be DOA though. - That mural in the background was ace, and it'd make an awesome album cover... kinda recalled the ATWIAD art with a more defined ethnic twist. - The dancing ladies in the background bugged the hell out of me... really sucked the coolness factor away. - The awkward intro was hilarious... the expression on Prince's face was a mix of "Huh?!" and "Well, shit." [Edited 4/26/08 0:42am] I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

Yeah that was just ok... With the exception of maybe Fury, its been the same ol' performance/sound since Musicology.

Oh, man. I watched an hour of a show I HATE to see 3 minutes of Prince.
I wish I'da known what time he was to perform it. Oh, well. Its okay because I really, really liked it. I mean, it was tight! I just need to see it again because I didn't catch all the lyrics.

I liked it and I was grooving

I loved the performance, song was great, really loved the beginning where he tried to look off-guard.
Sure it's not his greatest song or sound but it's good for Prince and a hell of a lot better than 90% of today's music. Besides, he can't blow the doors off the place right now, he's got Coachella to rock. I think he was just warming up... A working class Hero is something to be ~ Lennon

Shouldn't Prince be able to write mature, meaningful music in his old age? If he's been making music for what, 35 years, shouldn't it get better and not regress so much? I think Prince's pain is the fact that he's doing the best he can and it's no longer any good. That must feel horrible, no wonder he pays attention to other things like fan sites -- it gives him a way to try and feel in control, since he's no longer in control of the one thing he used to be good at, making music. So then what is your definition of "mature, meaningful music"? [Edited 4/26/08 1:02am]

I can't believe I spotted this BEFORE Dan did!
This song is about ROUGH anal sex ("against the law in 13 states") ("gonna make ya bleed") Is Prince still a Jehova's Witness? Or is anal sex maybe A-OK with the Watchtower crowd?

jesus christ monkey balls...i have to see this, sounds amazing; would never ever expect the current day prince to spout those type of lyrics - he's always had undertones of it - even as a JW, he's still prince - but this is slightly more than just undertones of filth lol. wicked Wouldn't you love to love me?

And what a sad, American program to perform upon. It's telling that Prince apparently thinks Jay Leno is the spot to go when he wants to hit the American airwaves. Performances, and songs, such as this (when taking into consideration his studio output for the better part of twenty years) should bring into focus how Prince is not a genius, just a talented pop star who had a nice run from 1980-1987. He dampens his legacy with each new outing and album. And I guarantee his upcoming festival show today will be nothing by a boring, by the numbers hits review. . AND WHAT THE F**K ELSE CAN HE PLAY AT A MUSIC FESTIVAL APART FROM HIS HITS???....IT WOULD BE MADNESS TO PLAY NEW OR OBSCURE STUFF TO CASUAL AND NON FANS AT A BIG FESTIVAL APART FROM HIS BIG HITS ??...YOU TALK UTTER RUBBISH.... That WAS HORRIBLE. So embarassing. It's like, after so much great progression through the 80s and into the 90s, he mentally went back to the 70s and got stuck there. I was watching like, what year am I in? This is SO LAME. I mean this would barely be good in the 70s. I can't believe I told people to watch this. He is so outdated. I don't know what to say. The hair, the song title, the lyrics, the movements, the vibe, ... it's caricature really. Had this been a decades-old broadcast sent back to Earth from aliens it would be more comprehendable. ----- "Had this been a decades-old broadcast sent back to Earth from aliens it would be more comprehendable." Now he's not good at that anymore, and he's pissed away so many years, collaborators, relationships, and now he's old and alone. Money or not, it must suck to be him. I bet anything he'd give back all that money if he could just be able to make good music again. All in my humble opinion! I'm sorry, but that rant is just a load of turd. Anyone who expects Prince at the age of 50 to be 'as good' as he was back in the day is just delirious. Sure, the performance didn't quite match the heights of other TV appearances he's done, but hey, it was still fun. I pulled my funk face a few times, so it can't be that bad . I think Prince is in a very content place in his life at the moment. He's not out there trying to break new ground like he once did, he's just kickin' it and having a good time. Nothing wrong with that. Co-sign. It was just a fun, funky performance. Pretty retro, nothing particularly exciting or adventurous - but you people saying it was terrible or embarrassing are just fantasists. You might not like the retro vibe of what Prince is doing right now, but he does it very well.

Some of the genius on this board really think that Prince should perfomr at a festival where he may not be well known and perform obsure music that only the hardcore fans are aware !!!! We are all lucky they are not making the business or performance decisions or Prince might be performing down at the Holiday Inn in downtown MPLS.

I can't believe you guys give a genius such an easy pass. You're not doing society any good with your low expectations. You know, Steve Tyler is 60 and he clearly has written kick-ass songs after 50 and will no doubt continue. I don't even understand this reasons. Age should bring wisdom and a richness of talent.

This is what saddens me the most. He's completely diluting his reputation. The song was a nice cut. The performance was a typical , high energy Prince performance. It was great. Was it circuit Lovesexy back in 88', hell no. Buthe is not diluting anything. He is doing what he has always done. Stand Up! Everybody, this is your life!
