I've been onstage once. Was close enough at Empire to be in the group he handed his guitar to. And at one of the Vegas aftershows, I was close enough to pick his pocket. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I wonder what you would have found in his pocket? A bit of lint and *cough* *cough* *Calling Kida, Gyro and CJ to clarify*

So tell me about the magic up close as you remember it Can't wait to read your stories I saw Prince perform in Aussieland in 2003. I had front row seats, although they were towards the side so they weren't that awesome. Funnily enough, I purchased them the day before the concert. Lucky me! He approached me quite a few times, so basically he was a metre in front of me during periods of the show. Could be we say... orgasmic. Seriously, I think a little came out I got some total recognition... "I LOVE YOU" and a little Princely twirl... You ought to see him soon, before he dies. Christina xx

It was at the House of Blues on June 5th, 2004, the last night of the Musicology tour in L.A. I was at the stage (Didn't go up there) and Prince came up and stared at me while giving a cowbell to the guy next to me. I was like He got some big eyes man. [Edited 4/16/08 7:53am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The Gold Experience, Wembley Arena. Front row seats towards the left. Mayte was dancing on the huge speakers in front of us in a little wrap around skirt, so it was like looking up her skirt for most of the show! So cool to see Prince close up. Pretty close at The o2 last year though..block 103 row D. Very close when he did the piano/sync slow bit. Now just need tickets to his new London show this year...he has to doesn't he?

Most recently, I was about 5 feet from the stage at one of the O2 aftershows (opening night) and when he did a lengthy guitar solo (sorry, can't remember the song now) I played air guitar and pulled the obligatory stupid funky faces. We stared at each other for about 15 seconds (I could see his eyes through his sunglasses)and I'm not sure if he thought I was a complete idiot or he appreciated my intensity. Either way, I think P is best seen in small venues where his talent becomes larger and the small details of his showmanship are more visible than in large stadia where his presence is diminished. To really appreciate Prince's talent and skill you have to be as observant as he is.

ON STAGE!!!! 3121 WASH DC (2nd show)
got there at 3:00 in the afternoon and WAS STILL ONLY 4TH IN LINE anywhoo's, my bitch-ass best friend comes and joins me in line at like 8:00 (yeah i know he had to work, but still....) i had already told the people behind me much earlier that he was coming so i wouldn't have to get all kung-fu on nobody about line jumping. anywhoo's...of course the process of letting everybody in with some kind of civility and order was doomed from the start, as everybody prett much got in the waiting room at the same time. so then the mad dash for the stage, and fortunately everybody ran left, where they saw Princ'es guitar stand. we went to the right corner and got two cozy spots right next to the front monitor. not the best (so i thoughth) but i had never been frow row before, so ehh. anywhoo's, the show's starting i'm happy, and one of the twinz's mic cord keeps getting stuck on the monitor , so like every 10 minuytes i'm on mike cord duty she points and mouths "thanks" and comes over and smacks the hell out of my hand (pretty hard for a small lady too )...sooo anywhoo's...they're wrapping the show up and all the pretty hot chicks are on stage as usual, and the twin comes over and tells me to get on stage!!!! WTF!!! so i can climb my chubby ass up on stage and then 30 seconds later my best friend is called up. so here we are, two chubby mid-30's bruthas on stage dancing with Prince. i must say though, i was tired as shit cuz he played a long ass song (can't even remember what it was, but that shit seemed like 45 minutes long ) so then...PRINCE WALKS BY US WITHIN 5 FEET. i knew dude was small, but damn, he is reallly teeny. so anyway we get off the stage, concerts over and i call my sister (who always goes to these shows with me but passed on this one)...and told her we danced on stage with prince. she said she was happy for, but deep down inside i know she was fucking pisse. that's all Fury

Front row seat at Musicology. I got the tickets as a Father's Day present for my dad, and wouldn't ya know, Prince personally invited him onstage for a little "solo dance".

Babymine said: The closest I ever was, and this was incredible! was at the Glam Slam club in Minneapolis. He was doing a benefit concert during the pre-Gold Experience days (summer of 94? I cannot remember the date). The club was standing room only, first-come, first serve. I waited for hours to get in, and was right at the stage, only 4-5 feet from the microphone stand. He pretty much played all new material, including Shhh! and P Control. The stage was set up with the center section of the picture on the inside of The Gold Experience album (looking very phallic!) He shook hands with me on a number of occassions, and made eye contact throughout the show. I was surprised at how soft his hands felt - not a single callus was noted, and it was his left hand - used on the fret of his guitar!
I was a little embarrassed, although also intrigued at what he was wearing -- a sleeveless, all black, all lace, one-piece outfit. It put the "assless pants" to shame. I remember seeing one picture from that night, in that outfit, in the St. Paul Pioneer Press the next day. I did not keep the photo, and have never seen a copy of it since. What a great concert! What a night! Geez, I forgot about the Glam Slam days--yeah, I was right up at the stage at least three or four times.

Seen Prince live 3 times...all three on the floor.
Two Jam of the Year concerts in 97 maybe about 15 rows from the stage. Great seats. Reaaaalllly up close (kind of) for Musicology. Second row on the floor but since it was in the round, people on the sides kinda got screwed. P and the band played to the audience counterclockwise from us mostly but came over often to sing, jam on the guitar, etc. At several points, the dude was 7 feet away and it was surreal that my idol was RIGHT THERE. I was kind of afraid that at the end when they called people on stage to dance that he would pick my ass, figuring I would be as goofy as hell and everyone would make fun of me. I avoided eye contact as he was looking around selecting the dancers, like he was a teacher that was going to call on my ass to answer a question or something. Needless sidenote: Because it was a Prince concert, I guess, these two girls in front of me on the front row kept acting like they were making out...you know because the music was making them so hot or something. But damn, they sucked at it and it was obvious they didn't know what the hell they were doing and really they should be banned from all future Prince concerts. I've been waiting four years to get that off my chest. All good things they say never last...

Well.
I stood right by the monitor at an aftershow at Bagley's Studio in Kings Cross in London once (I remember the band played for hours before he came on and the stage was really high, and I was really thirsty, and ended up sloping off!) about ten metres away at an aftershow on Kingley Street (we got there late, there was no stage to speak of and the guy rocked out) and once over the stage on a balcony at the Café de Paris in Leicester Square, in London, although paradoxically this wasn't the best place to stand.
