D'Angelo should have been more popular / mainstream that he was / is. If he was, he could come close, in terms of genuine-ness, even though hes a different type of artist.

There are so many artists who are influenced by Prince, but i dont think it would be easy to become popular without coming across as trying too hard or being too similar.

Hes done the sex thing, the multi instrumental thing, the prolific thing and the weird thing, so anyone who aspires to be the next Prince would have a very hard time making it. Id say the best thing would be to not try too hard, and become mainstream to begin with, and take it from there.

If there was a mainstream funk scene, that would be good. God i wish it was the 70s. Please make it the 70s again.

Oh...no
Oh no.
Oh, hell no.
I just listened to the song.
It's horrible, his voice is so bad, he sounds like Justin Timberlake sucking helium.

No offence to the poster, but personally I find it extremely offensive to compare a jackass in a disney musical to Prince.

well I wasn't comparing them at all. I was saying "The Next Prince??" in a bit of a sarcastic way, I don't think they're comparable(sp?) at all.

Exactly. Until I see this Corbin guy achieve the things that Prince has or even surpass that, he can't hold a fucking candle to Prince.

Sure, the kid may have been inspired by him just like many others our hero has inspired (Lenny, Sananda, Van Hunt, D'Angelo, Outkast, Beck, Basement Jaxx, Nep2unes, etc.), but there really is only one Prince.

So I read somewhere on line that people are calling Corbin Bleu of High School Musical the next Prince. Apparently he has a song out there called Shake It Off that is an ode to Prince. I've heard it, he does a Prince-esque falsetto on it and in interviews he has said that he really looks up to Prince.

Obviously the kid isn't anywhere near Prince, not even sure if he can play any instruments and he's a product of Disney. But I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about him or this song?

So there's the song and I gave it a chance but, nah! I'm not feelin' it...

Wtf??? That's a Jarvis Church song. lol

Sorry..but I saw this kid sing the Banner on a Roy Jones Jr PPV fight back in January and he hit every other note off key. We were all looking at each other like "who threw this kid up here?" Even people in the crowd were laughing.

With all due respect to him, no one can touch what P did back in the late 70's and 80's.

The one thing that all these artists miss is that Prince never tried to be cool. He came along and did something very different, and over time he became popular for it. Hes successful not because hes unique, but because he stayed unique rather than trying to be cool. That made him cool, and anyone can do it. Just dont try so hard.

He was just a shy 70s guy with some strange ideas who thought to himself "im a shortass but i can play this here guitar, so i might aswell do my own thing, what have i got to lose?"

Copying Prince doesn't make you the next Prince. Doing something amazing and innovative in a way that is comparable to Prince would be a start, though.

he can dream and aspire to be like him why shouldnt he, prince is the epitome of success as an artist. But people shouldnt put Corbin that high to compare him to a man that has worked so hard and achieved so much, their creating enough room for him to fall.

I AGREE!!!

Wow Chilli, that just sounds very cool, don't know why but it does!
I don't think there will be another Prince ever, maybe too bad but then again that ain't bad. Just proves how special and talented he is.

Isn't that Corbin guy also the one from the kids version from Lost? Sitting on that Island after their plane crashed?

To be the next Prince...you'd have to do more than just rip off his music. (Not saying Corbin is exactly doing that)
You'd have to be as revolutionary as him, touch as many genres as him, crossover like him. Produce, write and play darn near all your shit. Be a all around MF'n genius.

It takes more than a feminine, light skinned kid that sings in falsetto to be Prince.

Hmm someone that can record/produce everything on their own, sing in the studio and as well out on tour, play every instrument, think of styles, be ahead of the curve on something like the internet.. remember he was made fun for selling music online eek The simpsons had him as the head of the internet lol someone who has 2,500+ songs music videos and albums ready to be released the day he dies.

wow

ofcourse..

No One! cool

Someone has to do all that plus think of stuff he hasnt in the business.

There will be Prince Music for another 300 years after he dies! Think about it, if he put a new unreleased album out every year or every other year, there can be new unknown/unheard music in the 23 century. Star Trek times! eek
