Question about 'The Word'. I really do like this song. It might be my favorite track off the '3121' album. The song has got such a nice feel and flow to it I think. What do you all think of the (short) guitar solo near the end of this song? I love it. It does have a kind of Santana style to it, especially in the beginning of his solo. Anyway, I wish that it would have gone on just a bit longer, same thing as with the solo on 'The One U Wanna See' from the 'Planet Earth' album, but its still great nonetheless. Anyone else on here dig the guitar playing on this song?

I have always loved that Solo on the The Word. I was in fact listening to it yesterday. It's short...but sweet as hell!

It was my favorite track off of 3121. (Fury would have been if I had not heard the SNL live version first, which was much better than the studio version on 3121).
Although after repeated listenings, the vocal layering he used for the chorus grated on my nerves, I still like the song. It's like this neat little gospel song, smoothed out on some type of sensual, almost erotic vibe--especially the beginning when it kicks off and the mute horn comes in. It's just sexy as hell. Reminded me alot of his old days when Sex, love, and God could all be tied together without drowning in dogmatic drivel. great tune.

Well at least we all agree that this is a good tune, which proves that you don't *have to* mix sex with God to make a good song...

That song is amazing in so many ways
I think its one of those songs I took another look at because people here were raving about it. I might not completely understand what its about and at this point, I really don't care. This is like the perfect "studio" song where I can just picture Prince hanging out in his studio putting this masterpiece together. So good you could say that it wrote itself. He was truly in his element here and played until he felt he had to stop. That's why the guitar solo stops as soon as it starts. He felt it was time for him to stop and he got the vibe that he wanted. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Just when the song seems to be getting even better, hitting another level it fades..... I think he made up for that with his 2007 ALMA Awards version. As with Fury, some songs are just better live.

Didn't actually know about a live version of the song. Did he play a longer guitar solo than on the album version?

"The Word", is JW talk. JW's refer to the Bible as "The Word". Also, listen to the lyrics, "don't you want to get saved".

not gonna turn this in2 a religious debate here, but other forms of religious beliefs will also say "don't u want 2 get saved" so despite the implication it's of the JW faith as in ur words, what does that have 2 do with the price of tea in china? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

yeah his guitar tone is great on that song. All in all it's not the greatest melody, but it's a great song. Great organic feel, decent lyrics if you don't mind some god, good beat. It also sounded great live, when he played the Alma awards. My Legacy

Great soulful song as well. I'm really getting into this album. It's still pretty new to my ears in fact. I actually got the 'Planet Earth' album first.

[Edited 4/6/08 5:45am] [Edited 4/7/08 12:44pm] I dig the whole song from start to finish. I think it's my favorite off of 3121 too. If there was an extended version of that song, I'd probably wet my pants! I love it so much. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
