Prince's "Adore" inspired by Patti LaBelle's "Winner In YOu

I read in the discography that Prince was inspired by Patti Labelle's album Winner In You when he wrote Adore. Does anyone happen to know which song/songs?

I've gotta look that up. I know that when Prince was here in Philadelphia for the Musicology concert, he introduced Patti sitting in the audience, it seems they've worked together before and are well acquainted. biggrin

It says in the liner notes or "The Hits" that he was influenced by Patti Labelle and Luther Vandross' records, but didn't mention which ones. If you think about it, Adore was probably written in 86 or early 87. Patti's "Winner In You" came out in 86....while Luther had 2 extremely popular albums around that time (The Night I fell In Love and Give Me The Reason). Who knows for sure?

Yeah,in the DMSR book,it says that in 1986,Prince was listening to Patti LaBelle's 'Winner In You' album and Luther Vandross' 'Give Me The Reason' album. He liked these albums alot and it inspired him to come up with a truly soulful song ("Adore") for his own next album.

As for which song(s) he was most inspired by...the most "soulful" songs on Patti's album are the two ballads "Kiss Away The Pain" and "Finally We're Back Together Again".

I would say "Finally We're Back together" and any of Patti's ballads probably inspired Adore (including If Only You knew).

Don't forget P also wrote/produced "I Hear Your Voice" on Patti's "Burnin'" album in addition to Yo Mister.
