Well, I was 14 at the time it premiered. Marvin Gaye's death was still fresh in everyone's minds, so hearing "WDC" for the first time was definitely the best distraction. At the time, that song was SO different than anything on the radio. I remember that day like it was yesterday - the radio guy says, "This is the new single by Prince" and then this weird intro comes on...
Later that summer, I really got hooked on Prince (and on the guitar), courtesy of the "Dirty Mind" album. But it was WDC that really got the ball rolling. I even had a huge Prince poster where he and the Revolution had on the same outfits from the WDC video. Ah, the memories My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

I remember it like yesterday it was almost like a epiphany, I was 13 back in 1984 and I don't know if P was popular in England at this time but i had never heard of him. Musically i was listening to Wham , Culture Club, Spandau Ballet,Soft Cell and MJ. It was a Saturday morning and i was watching Saturday Superstore (i think) when the video for WDC came on. I was hooked from that day to this. It was so different to anything around at the time i could not get enough of it and i had to have more. I went straight out to my local record shop to get all the info i could and a copy of WDC 7" vinyl which i still play every now and again. Ah memories!!!!

I remember I saw the MTV World Premiere video when the single was released (May 84???)..and I hadn't heard the song yet....When I heard that octave divider intro guitar solo, it was like being hit with a bag of bricks. I was like "is he playing this backwards?" and "what kind of scale is that?..a straight up snake charmer?"..(the guitarists on the org will get what I'm talking about).
Then when the song kicked in, it was like something out of this world. Sparse synth, no bass, flanged drums and just heavy vocals. That's when I kind of figured out it was P and not the band. And the lyrics hit home..(Brutha B I know you can relate). Throughout that summer I must have heard that song a zillion times and it really hyped me up to see the movie. I don't think I've ever been as souped up over a flick before that or after. And everyone I knew (funksters, headbangers, DuranWham heads, hip hoppers) loved the song. A great crossover hit.

Ha,ha!!!! That's what I was before being a major Prince fan from'86!!! Oh he definitely crossed over alright!!! (although it was Kiss that done it for me!) I was 16yrs old living in Nigeria then, Aware of Prince, but was more into funk acts like cameo, Brass Constuction, Rick James etc. A friend just came back from London, and i borrowed a tape of new jams he recorded off Kiss fm. The first song had this weird guitar intro, a body without bass, high pitched screeches, and a wicked violin-like sound towards the end. Never heard anything like it b4, and i was completely hooked. Paid good money to have the video cassette of the movie sent to me when it came out, and my loyalty to his purple highness was complete Friends never understood my rock-like obsession of the little man (MJ ruled the airwaves), and i spent yrs after that without success explaining the genius behind the black/white, girl/boy act. Damn u Prince, Why did u have to drop ATWAID right after that. Friends had a good laugh , but hey, what did they know??

I don’t recall the where. WDC reminded me of Middle Eastern music. I began to envision (No...l was not high. ) a large stage. From each side, groups of belly dancers, began to dance in synch unto the stage. First group: one, second group: two. Until twenty dancers graced the stage. They each took a turn and interpreted the music as it moved them.
WDC hooked me to Prince’s music. I had to buy all the prior albums. I was 31yo and felt like a school kid...leaving the record store with all those Prince goodies. I sported a smirk on that long M15 bus ride from 42nd St and 2nd to Delancey and Allen Streets. I'll ♥️ "LemonDrop" 2DN 💋 your "Sugar"

I was 13 yrs old sitting in my aunts sitting room in a place called Ashbourne in Ireland, trying to amuse myself (no, not that sort of amusement before anyone mentions it ) and this song came on some video show I was watching, I always remember first thinking there were 2 Princes, one staring jealously at the other over the lake. Some weeks later the song broke into the British charts and basically the different style of music and haunting lyrics got me hooked. If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

I had just come home from summer school, the summer between the 11th and 12th grade. I first heard it on my mother's console stereo and loved it, especially the screams. Andy is a four letter word.

Honestly, I don't remember the first time I heard it since I was like 1 and a half. But I do remember my mother playing her cassette version of "Purple Rain" to death. I never got tired of it though. The album was so larger than life to my virgin ears, and listening to it was like being taken on some kind of musical journey. And that has yet to change to this very day being that it's my #1 favorite album ever!
I do remember seeing the video on MTV at that time though and being blown away by it. Well, I was pretty much into anything the man produced, but WDC was a real knockout. Considering that I was an infant and still learning of the world around me, it didn't take too much for me to be entertained. And oh yes, Prince was very entertaining. You could not get me away from the TV for anything whenever Prince came on. My young mind could not yet grasp the amazing radicalism behind the song's style and production. I just thought it was like any other pop song that was on the radio or on MTV since most of the tunes sounded employed the then-latest technology. It would be years before I grew to understand and appreciate the innovative style behind the song. Now I understand that when compared to other songs that were hot (MJ, Madonna, Huey Lewis, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, ), WDC was and still is totally unmatched. The odd thing about it was that every time I heard it, I always came in when 3/4 of the song had already played. Everytime I would get into the car and I turned on the radio, the song would be on, usually in the same spot. No matter who I was with. If I was with my mother or with my friends who were old enough to drive, didn't matter. I could never catch the song from the beginning. This happened around 7 times in a row. I had already known from the folks in the shipping department at my beloved Tower Records for a good 3 weeks when the sigle was going to drop. But radio had already been bumping it and it still wasn't quite time for the release yet. I remember being in the car with one of my friends saying that this was the new prince song. He didn't believe it was Prince. And he was a fan like I was. I was like "Yeah man, that's P. Can't u tell? Just listen to it. Who else could sound like that?" What was throwing him off was that P was singing in his baritone voice. I knew better. I was like "Listen to the harmonies...That's Prince. And then when P did go into his falsetto, I was like "There! Now who in the hell else is that?! Of course it's Prince!". I could tell from the music it was P. Mind u, I still hadn't heard the intro. Finally I caught the song from the beginning on the radio and I fucking lost my mind. Never had I been this hyped up about a brand new song. When I heard P's guitar lead opening up, I broke my neck grabbing my own guitar, trying to learn what I heard him just do. Finally, when I called on the day it was supposed to be released, and they told me they would have to hold me a copy cuz the 45 was flying out the door. I got the 45, which was on purple wax. I was stoked to Kingdom Come. I wore that out, learning the guitar run in the intro. I had to wait untill the album was to come out cuz I could tell P had another guitar solo that was fading out on the 45 mix.
That purple 45 was the bomb back in the day. That intro to WDC is still the best I've ever heard-thanks for sharing Blackguitaristz Sry. I broke the rules..but My reaction 2 'WDC' -> I was wonderin when somebody was gonna bring up 45's Jeeze..I find myself 'daydreaming' thinkin about back then hearing when doves cry.. That song is still the shit! No doubt! I just jammed that song 2 day. follow the leader follow the leader

I was 9, and i was playing the edge of my tv like a keyboard and i think my sister had it playing from her room. I had a vision of a man in a bath, but i didnt know why. Years and years later i saw the video and realised that i must have seen it briefly and so the image must have stuck in my mind.

P was tapped into something hella deep during this period. NOTHING was going to stop this cat. There was a sort of magic on what P was doing. It was all over WDC, Let's Go Crazy, Erotic City. EVERYBODY, no matter where u went, people were playing P's music. This started from May 84 through late 85. Purple Rain totally REIGNED over everything. The album, the film, the tour....Being a part of that having been a fan of P's from the get. I was like the only person all my friends knew that had actually seen P live in concert. And at that stage, I had seen P 3 times already. This was before the Purple Rain tour. Even I, who was 15, had this Prince "fog" around me. People who didn't know me acted as if they could see it. That year in 84, 85, the more popular P became, so did I with the kids I went to school with. I was cleaning up with the girls. It didn't hurt that I played guitar too and was already into Hendrix. So I was playing the rock thing too. Even from other girls who didn't go to my school. If u were already into P, there was a certain type of aura about u. It's hard to explain. Not evetybody had it at that time. It's an attitude I think. Being black, wearing my hair long, the way I dressed, like a black rocker, etc and actually being a musician, it was like bees to honey!
