Introduction to Prince

Hi there

I'm about to buy my first Prince CD but I'm not sure what's the best one to get .

I asked a girl I work with who is a Prince nut and she just said ALL OF THEM !

So I was hoping that the good people at Prince.org would point me in the right direction .

Thanks

well...it all depends on yo taste...
but if ya want 2 know what P is all about...
U could start with any of these 4 albums...
PURPLE RAIN,1999,SIGN O' THE TIMES and DIRTY MIND.

this is the perfect introduction to the world of Prince...
then when ya feel u need more...
go on2 more deep stuff like LOVESEXY,COME and THE GOLD EXPERIENCE.

Enjoy da ride...cos its gonna be a heck of a one.

I created a CD-ROM on early Prince albums (from "For You" to "Come"), which also has running video commentary, video clips where available for each album and the notes and dates have been appropriated from Per Nilsens book.

Contact me if U wanna get a hold of this. could give U some more insight.

This is easy:

Purple Rain
Sign 'O' the Times

The 'newer' Prince:

Love Symbol (1992)
Emancipation (1996)

Not all are necessarily his best, but they are accessive and show the variation in Prince's musical styles.

The quickest shortcut is to buy the 3 CD set called The Hits/B Sides.

If you want an even quicker intro, buy The Very Best of Prince.

If you don't want it quick, but you prefer to get to know and savor Prince slowly, start with "For You" and work your way from there smile

I'd say, get Sign O' The Times
If you don't like that one, you'll not like any of them. This one captures all thats great about Prince whilst leaving out a lot of the crap that some albums can contain.

The best way to get started with any artist
is buy a greatest hits album.

With Prince there's the one-CD "The Very Best Of Prince"
Or the 3-CD "The Hits/The B-Sides"
(you can also get "The Hits 1" and "The Hits 2" separately)

That way you'll get to hear a lot of tracks from
throughout his career, and get a feel for his
more instant 'pop' material. Then you'll have
a better idea which 'proper' album you'd enjoy
most.

Hi Huggy, welcome 2 The Dawn hug

Well my faves r Purple Rain,Gold Experience & SOTT
I'd say those 3,& also Hits/b-sides if u can find it cheap, because the b-sides are great, altho if u end up collecting bootlegs & unreleased material like myself,& extended mixes,i u will find alot of the extended mixes of b-sides,ie: "She's Always In My Hair","Erotic City","17 Days",etc...
In order i would say:
Purple Rain
Gold Experience
Sign O' The Times
Diamonds & Pearls
prince
Controversy
just 4 your 1st few albums smile

Welcome 2 the wonderful world or being a Prince fan smile
i found this world 3 years ago & its the best thing that ever happened 2 me.

Thats how i got in2 Prince heavily,i bought hits/b-sides which gave me a vibe of his works,78-93 at least. So that is a great idea.
(dont buy Very Best Of... its just Warner's way of making money off Prince's talent without him even being on the label nowadays, its just morals 4 me anyway.)
