Those amazing prince overdubs...miss 'em Just began "Possessed", was given to me by a non-P fan, but a good friend who understands hard core fam love. Learing that he overdubbed "For You" 46 times, I mean, whoaa. Those early years and the 80's were all about him essentially creating a choir of his own voice. Why have back up singers when you can have yourself sing it, instead. I miss that sound. It is so distinctly him. Especially 1999. I guess things change. He stills does it a little. He doesn't own the stage with his dancing and splits and performance art exploits like days of old, he has the twins to be extentions of his dancing self, which is fine and I think it really works. He looks good and sounds good. But 46 times for an over dub? What a control freak. Love him. | |

Good topic! I love those extensive overdubs. Nowadays he seems to be satisfied with three and then the leadvoice. One low, two in the midrange, while the leadvoice goes adlip, high up.
Also the experimenting with the backing vox vs lead seems less. Listen to Forever in my life, where the lead vocals follow the backing vox (by mistake apparently!) or Anotherlover, where the play between backing and lead (esp the second verse) is so well done! | |

Anotherlover...is one of his most impressive compositions regarding this subject. Another one to consider is If I was your girlfriend with the speeded up main vocal, and the incredibly overdubbed slowed down backing. I often think how many time he may have had to sing the line so that when slowed down to the correct pitch, it was also in time with the music!!! Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy! | |
