If Someone Asked U About Prince

Because they know U are a fan of his music and they asked U to recommend three of his albums, what albums would u recommend to them and why?
(No, "The Hits Vol. 1 and 2" don't count. lol )

(1) SOTT - The album flowed superbly the entire two discs and the best part is that it was an unpredictable album, different, yet interesting and fun. It has songs ranging from politically and socially thought-provoking to spritually and romantically hypnotizing, and the voice-altering was trippy, but in a good way. It's just an all around good show of great lyrics perfectly intertwining with amazing beats.

(2) The prince Album - For me, the prince album tells a story about change in mind, body, and soul from Prince's point of view and the conflict that arises. I think this album is a very personal piece of who Prince was at this time in his life. It tells a love story. From his introduction to the album with, "My Name Is Prince", to the end with, "The Sacrifice of Victor", Prince proved that the greatest part of the whole story were the ups and downs that made up the body of this album. All very different sounding sounds, but with one universal message, "U can't be happy with another person if you aren't happy with yourself."

(3) Girl 6 Soundtrack - I like that the 'Girl 6 soundtrack' consists mostly of songs that were released as either B-Sides, unreleased, or were released under artists associated with Prince. There's no real order to any of the songs on the album, but I think that's one of the reasons why I like it. All the songs are different, but show the many talents of one main artist.

Most of the songs on Girl 6 I don't ever remember being all commercial hits. Mostly B-Sides and/or unreleased songs.

I'd go; 1999, Sott, and the Rainbow children (or Around the World in a Day)

I would think that 1 project from each decade would provide the most depth.

Wow... I love these types of questions hmmm

Well, knowing that they're not quite familair with him... I'm trying to think of them as if they were me. I didn't know what to expect and there were a lot of things I had to overcome before I could fully assimilate myself in2 fully enjoying the music.

I'd say:

1) SoTT: b4 hearing this album, I didnt think it was possible to convert someone bent on not liking Prince to loving his work... this album I think can make anyone like/love Prince

2) Purple Rain: it's a STAPLE as one of the purpel people cool May be selling out, and may also be one of the best so it may go downhill from there as far as quality goes... I still stand by it because its an amazing body of work. And ultimately, Prince wrote this (and decided to do the movie) to show the world just what he's made of woot!

3) prince: with a few exceptions here and there, it's an impressive body of work that I think anyone can respond to. Given the works like 7, The Morning Papers, Damn U, Continental, God Created Woman... the list goes on... this has become one of my favorites.

Now if the person's up for a little out of the ordinary fun and doesn't mind taking a few risks, I'd also recommend 1999 and The Gold Experience, easy cool
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I recently created a big fan just by recommending 3121. Now he's bought almost all the studio albums in the last few months.

It all depends on the person you're trying to turn.

I believe these three choices would show a stranger to Prince music, his talent and versatility.

3 albums? I'd probably go with:

The Very Best Of Prince - a good starter that guarantees there will be something they will enjoy.

Sign O The Times - not my personal favorite, but it does capture Prince at his ecclectic best.

3121 - probably the best of recent 'comeback' albums.

The problem with albums like TRC and prince is that (even though I personally LOVE these albums) you run the risk of people not getting the 'concept' and thinking that he's just some weirdo.

Another option for me would be to hand someone The Hits/The B-Sides (3 discs) and say "this is really all you need to know about Prince . . ."

Although EVERYBODY wants to recommend SOTT, the album starts slow, has quirky tunes, and introduces the Cammile voice which can be off putting. It's like listening to the Beatles for the first time--alot of folks might not 'get it'.

I'd recommend:

The Gold Experience - very tight, deliberately likeable tunes, covering multiple genres, switching gears better than any other songwriter out there could do.

Purple Rain - short, likeable, and full of energy. Another album deliberately written to be likeable and hit.

prince - one of hist most underrated albums. Filled with likable songs, and extremely feisty performances. Sure the concept is boring, some parts are excessive--but it's all over the place, covering as much ground as TGE or Emancipation, and has some of his most pop worthy material of the 90s.
