A good ballad, no question about that.

But it also did show quite clearly Prince was turning into a follower instead of an innovator in the nineties.

I mean: he used that synthesized 'plan flutes', made popular by german pop-act Enigma, very prominently on this song.

On Graffiti Bridge he allready tried some New Jack Swing (on the song 'New Power generation'), on Diamonds and Pearls he tried to incorporate hip-hop influences, but unfortunately it were the corny ones (Jughead and Push remind me of Mc Hammer).

On the Symbol album, Come and Emancipation he bothered us with dated, detached house (I wanna melt with u, Loose, New world).

I mean, the early nineties are for me, the period that Prince 'lost it' as an artist.

Instead of following his own muse, he went into copying shallow R&B and commercial hip-hop, going for popularity instead of selfexpression.

Next to that, he did go for the 'old trick', look how good, tight and versatile my band (The NPG) is, but ultimately that isnt what matters. How matter how strong your band is, without strong, urgent, original, honest songmaterial youre gettng nowhere.

Showing off might help to impress for a while, but without substance you dont keep a musical career running.
And unfortunately, since the early and middle nineties Prince seems lost when it comes to grasping that knowledge.

Love this song to death but the Martha thing killa me every time. ARTH? its such an old lady's name. How can anyone called Martha be sexy. My great aunt was called Martha and i workrd in an old people's home where every second woman was called Martha.
But..... i guess he is kinda old himself. You forget that tho as he doesnt look it one bit.
Only 50 year old i would gladly put my hips up in the air for.xx

tho' I battled blind
love is a fate resigned
memories mar my mind
love it is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
and laughed at by the Gods
and now the final frame
Love is a losing game
