Hearing music when it's NOT on

Alright, I'd like to know if this happens to anyone else.

At night, I can lay in bed and imagine a song (usually Prince) and really relax and let myself hear all the instruments. Then, all of a sudden, the music goes from inside my head to outside my head. It's really like an incredible stereo has turned on in my room. It's loud and perfect - definitely outside my head and hearing with my ears.

This lasts until I say to myself "hey, I'm doing it!" - then it shuts off - usually about 10 seconds.

Does this happen to anyone else? I am definitely not asleep - I can turn to my side and get some water, etc.

Also, I wonder if this is what musicians like Prince mean when he says he "hears music all the time". Sometimes I hear new things - or can control an orchestra, like think "more horns" and it happens. But this is more rare - normally just the tracks I imagine.

Anyone?

Wow! You can do it when walking around??? I need much more concentration. I can do Beck and Pink Floyd as well - anything that I have listened to enough to really know all the instruments.

Curious, when out in public, does in replace ambient sound or mix with it?

Holy crap! I just checked your profile - we have the same birthday - not just the day, but the year. You and I were born on the same exact day!!!

I'm saying...

But, yes I've heard music in my head when it's not playing. I do it subconciously most times, and like you said usu. when I realize it, it's stops.

and seeing things... just kidding:)

To be honest, it happens to me all the time, especially since I tend to have the songs I really like on heavy repeat mode. I can go through an entire day [teethbrushing session, washing up, commute, gym, walk in the street, multitasking at computer, etc.] listening to just one song. I just keep it running. Like the other day, I had 'Thieves in the Temple' on through the entire day, and I don't need to expand on how when I finally switch it off, the song does go on in my head afterwards, even onto the next day sometimes. I can hear all the sounds and inflections in Prince's voice very clearly, even though I'm not a musician. Very often I have a song in my head when I go to bed at night, and when I wake up the next day, the first thing I 'hear' - like, the first 'thoughts' in my head - is the song, as if it hadn't stopped playing in my head all night...

Do I need to seek treatment, do you think?smile

Well actually I've read in a Newseek article on music and the brain a while ago that this amazing 'recording exercise' is the brain's way of seeking stimulation. When it's not deeply engaged in something [thoughts or activity], it plays back something we have heard/listened to carefully.

See, we are all quite sane:)

Not sure about the lounge music though. I'm not THAT mental!!! wink

If I'm not actually listening to music, there are still tunes in my head! I'm always kind of singing or humming something to myself.

If it's not music, then it's scenes from films, but always something going on!

Well, you are a bit of a jukebox aren't you? wink

That must be great, I mean, being able to hear your own music. I've never been able to create my own, I am too busy enjoying that of others... Although I see colours when I listen to music I like, and it makes me feel like painting...

I think u have the answer. I keep playin ''mountains at the moment it never goes and can be a bit distracting when someone talks to me as it still plays, so i must be bored to hell if my brains rerunning the same tune.

I often dream music too clearly word for word and when i wake i remember it but not the words

as for royalshyness and lounge music
i agree a different 'type' of music is calming and gives ur ears a work out. I love jazz and some classical too - couldnt name u any of it but love it all the same. i play that stuff off the radio cos sometimes its cool to not have words put in ur head and instrumentals allow you other thoughts created by the sounds. They used to actually teach this when i was at school we always had a ;listening; session from the BBC

I know this is gonna sound crazy but...it's the CIA.

They have this sound projection system. They've used it in Iraq.

The bastards have an image projection system, as well.

Don't ask me how I know...

They watch a lot of things that are on computer. For instance, I just heard "Dream Factory"...

eek

I'm not kidding.

We need to organize a protest. If they don't comply, we should create total anarchy.
