I haven't played a CD in a loooong time--for several reasons.. My ability to play the songs in my head is the main reason. No need for an IPod at this point. [Edited 4/8/08 14:37pm]

I hear music in my head damn near all the time. Not Prince's music or anyone else's music, mind u. But music passages, progressions, yeah. This has a lot to do with because I'm a musician. But I was also like this from when I was very, very young. As far back as I can remember. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

What's beyond me is how people can hear and create NEW music in their mind, I mean musicians/artists/those with such abilities.
I constantly have a little tune in my head, but it's always something I've heard before, never something completely new. I've had no problem improvisisng in my drama classes, so with words, but in terms of new tunes: impossible. Sometimes I struggle in my mind to divert the melody I hear inside to change it and make it my own, but I always fall back to the existing tune. It's so f.....g annoying! This goes to the heart of music-making and I guess it's really basic/elementary for professional musicians and the creative type. But please enlighten me - how do you guys do it??! [if any of you here creates music for work or fun]. And I hope you realize that the answer I dread is: "It just happens"

Not as out of mind as some people had, but sometimes random lyrics or melodies pop into my head and it takes me a while to realise which song they're from.
But I mainly see colors when I listen to music. Like Erotic City is a kind of tan/brown. Raspberry Beret is rain blue despite the title Shhh.. is maroon. The Beautiful Ones is rain blue as well... The list goes on and it doesn't stop at Prince songs.

Yeah, a lot of people have said "inside my head" - the freaky part is that I hear it from "outside" my head. "They" say voices from inside your head are ok - it's when you hear it from outside your head that you have to worry (schizophrenia) - like coming from inside the walls, or from your dog. I guess as long as I hear from outside my head, but my dog isn't singing lead, I'm OK! [Edited 4/9/08 16:44pm]

Do you mean that when it comes to the music you hear in your head, you can control it? - including the persistent little tunes that seem to pop out of nowhere and that some people find hard to 'switch off'?
I can control the flow of thoughts in my mind, but not of music. A different brain breed?... royalshyness said: i think of the brain/mind like a radio station. there's alot of different frequencies u can tune into in the 'ether' so to speak.

sort of. i dont hear music in my head. i create it and send it out into other peoples lol
but i'm talking about when ur mind is open to hearing the frequencies in the ether that are all around us, being generated from a central source and pulsing out in waves. its not u doing it. ur receiving it. like a radio or living jukebox. Ah ok I see, it's about picking up from what goes on around us, being receptive. Is there a censor at the gate/the gate of your mind or are its doors flung open for anything to come in?
"i dont hear music in my head. i create it and send it out into other peoples" That's even more cool:) Sorry to repeat this earlier post, but it's a bee in my bonnet, so here it is - enlighten me please, if/when you have the time and wish to do so: What's beyond me is how people can hear and create NEW music in their mind, I mean musicians/artists/those with such abilities. unfortunately no lol but i can tune out of what i dont want to hear if i need to. self-will. mind-control. What's beyond me is how people can hear and create NEW music in their mind, I mean musicians/artists/those with such abilities. 'new' is one of those words. u might use the same tools/sounds etc, but its the way u put them together, to express ur own unique inner tapestry that is a representation of the colour of your heart mind and soul at that moment, and when u know urself and centre urself and be true to your core, the expression u come up with is entirely unique.

"'new' is one of those words."
I know, and new is not necessarily best. Thanks for your thoughts on this. They appease me - I struggled in my college dissertations to present completely new ideas/concepts and became frustrated when I realized that all I could produce was the reheated/microwaved thoughts of others before me. I knew we all need inspiration, but I had this ideal of coming up with something brand new, of my own - but your definition of personal creation [using the same tools but in your own way] throws new light on this. "its the way u put them together, to express ur own unique inner tapestry that is a representation of the colour of your heart mind and soul at that moment, and when u know urself and centre urself and be true to your core, the expression u come up with is entirely unique." One of the best definitions of creativity/the creative process I've heard so far... But does that mean you never have these mini moments of musical 'creativity crisis', like writers have writers' block? royalshyness said: Flo6 said: Ah ok I see, it's about picking up from what goes on around us, being receptive. [Edited 4/9/08 16:44pm] It's reasonably uncommon for this to happen to people who aren't heavily into meditation, or drugs. I think you are probably well in touch with emotions and feelings to be able to do this regularly. A really good way to practice getting good at it, is to lie on you bed (by yourself) in the quiet and keep a clear head and try and let yourself (the self bit is really important) fall. If you can let go enough and stick with it, you can fall a really long way (metaphorically of course, queue the jokes) for a long time, it's this kind of clarity of thought (don't confuse it with concentration) that can really help control what you do or don't hear from your own head.

You mean that sensation of falling? I can do that sometimes but quickly shake out of it...

Exactly that, but it takes a while not to snap out of it. The further you fall the better, but it takes practice and be quite scary unless you are in the right place mentally.
