So would you play "Let's Pretend We're Married" to your new friend? No matter how great a song it is, "Let's Pretend We're Married" doesn't strike to me as exactly the first track you'd play to someone you are introducing the Prince. Sure, if you get it it's a true synthpunk (also known as "New Wave" for most) classic but if you would meet a person who likes, say a bit of Aretha Franklin and a bit of Led Zeppelin it probably would come off just as a really lousy piece of musicianship at first. Of course, I have blasting that thing with the volume knob on 11 on my stereos for years. With "repeat" pressed firmly down.
What is about the old classic Prince sound that seems initially so naive and even almost amateurish at times, yet when you start getting into it you just can't let it go? And don't just say it's called talent, it's gotta have something to with hormone secretion!

I'd play it for them IF they dug other songs on that album - DMSR & Lady Cab Driver are mandatory...

I don't understand why so many people like that song so much.

I think it can be played to 'a' friend but i would not play this at a first-time date to a girlfriend ,at least not for the 'message'. That is just not classy ,i think.
And i agree (and everyone should) that with simple means most beautiful things have been created. It is with this earlier work i really learned the definition of arranged and produced what music concerns.

somehow this track has made it on to many mix tapes for friends, so i guess that means i would play it for a newbie!

...but those drums: boom-clakka-boom-clakka-bonk! Wonderful, and the synth "figure". If this isn't art, then what is?
