Line up question Matt Dr Fink, Prince's keys/synth go to guy was with P from the late 70's, all the pre Revolution line ups, core member of the revolution, stayed on after the break up, playing with P all the way up to the nude shows.
But would he be considered to been a member of the NPG at all?

Sorry to disagree but no.
The Nude tour and Graffitti Bridge, both in'90 were only credited as Prince. The very last line of the Graffitti Bridge album is "The New power Generation has just taken control!" which is a kind of introduction to what's next to come! It wasn't until 1991 Diamonds and Pearls, that released material was credited to Prince and the New Power Generation, just after Fink had gone. [Edited 4/7/08 5:18am] Life's a Parade! Thanks for clearing that up.
I dont remember the nude shows being billed as Prince and the New Power Generation though. Graffiti Bridge had the song/single New Power Generation, but it wasn't until Diamonds and Pearls when the band were in turn referred to as the New Power Generation. Fink had no involvement with Diamonds & Pearls right? Also, my memory sucks, was he in the Graffiti Bridge movie/soundtrack album/line up? thanks

They also have good info on when the actual tracks were originally written and if they were meant for a previous album/project. Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

Cheers mentalist.
Good discography. I conclude from that, that Fink's last Album was Lovesexy and last tour was nude and was not a member of the NPG (but probably got gratis membership of the NPGMC ) If I'm incorrect, someone please set the record straight. Thanks.

Thanks. A Pleasure. That's how I see it so also interested if anyone knows any different! Not sure about the free membership though. I remember reading in the book "Slave to the rhythm" that he said he drove to Paisley Park to attend a Party Prince holding and he was refused entry! His response was that he had actually helped pay for that building!!! but was still refused entry!!! I'll try and find the exact part tonight and quote it properly. I was quite shocked when I read it!!! Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

I went to 11 of the Wembley shows and have a copy of the Tokyo show and don't recall the band being referred to as the NPG - only definitely from the year after! Other than Fink though, there wasn't much difference in the Nude and NPG line up. Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

You weren't even born!!!!! (I mean that respectfully!) Not that I wish to dis-credit your opinion as research into things brings up alot. But from my memory, the Nude tour was a greatest hits tour that Prince did on the back of the popularity of the Lovesexy tour and the Batman album. He also used it as an advertising platform for the upcoming Graffitti Bridge film. Now the terms Newpowersoul and NewPowerGeneration kinda started with Lovesexy and references were made of the band and the fans since then as a collective, but as far as the band being officially titled the New power generation, then it was definitely after the Nude tour. Even Tony M and crew in '90 were known as the 'Gameboyz', or something equally gay! They themselves were treated as a seperate entity to the rest of the band. The NPG was in fruition, but still far from full bloom!!! Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

I recall (only vaguely as it was so long ago) that his references to said New Power Generation were to some fictional ideal utopian society, which I'm sure Fink was a part of seeing as the Lovesexy album begins with the words: "Welcome to the New Power Generation". Long before the Graffiti Bridge single was released.
Yeah, now that you mention it, I remember reading that in Slave to The Rhythm also. Madness. Could have been some idiot bouncer though.

Yeah, The New power Generation was the either utopian or rebellion or dare I say new revolution that we were all part of! I remember when I first got hold of the Gett off single the day it was released. It was the first time I saw it stated as Prince and the New Power Generation, and thinking WTF? Life's a Parade! Gett off, first and only "video single" I ever bought.
Embarrassing. The origin of the NPG is as mysterious as the origin of The Revolution, what with the backwards writing on the 1999 album cover.

The 1999 album most definitely does state "and the revolution! Did you not like Video singles then? You got to love Violet the Organ grinder? The Versace swimming trunks with Braces and the Rollerskating outfit on Gangster Glam etc. are more questionable though! Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

The term predates the tour.

oh well. I'm not doubting you, but I think as I've explained before that it was more to do with everyone as the new power generation rather than specifically the band. I'm getting less and less inclined to disbelieve or dispute you younger fans, because it seems alot of you guys in your new found excitement and love for Prince are cramming in as much Prince History as your brains and time will allow and you're all turning into mini Wikipedias of Prince!!!!! Old gits like me are still trying to rely on memories up to 20 odd years old!!! It's all good mate!!! I don't doubt that you heard it but don't believe it was the official band title at that time.
