You have to consider the source. The main word when it comes liking something or someone is LOYALTY, like in a favorite sports team, a lot of these people don't have any loyalty and are just here for attention because this is the only place they can get it. t=Then you've got the school kids and the people on computers from the library, detention centers and nut houses. To the topic.... I try to keep my discussion on his music and clothing, because that is what interests me. I can choose to like or hate either, doesn't make me any less of a fan... but personal stuff about Prince... he is a grown ass black man, and I choose to treat him as such... his lifestyle is his business, because I am a grown ass woman that doesn't care about what he does, just keep the music coming P it's all good.... and besides Prince doesn't do things based on whether we as fans are going to approve, he just does what ever he feels like doing. Just because i love the mans music, shouldnt mean i can never be critical about certain choices he seems to make as a person (like taking his material off of Youtube, for example).

To take it even further, when i would care too much about the persons behind the music i like, i could never listen to some of my musical favourites. I mean:
- It is said both James Brown and Miles Davis were real assholes in their personal lives. James Brown has been put into jail for drug-possesion and wive-beating for example.
- Van Morrison, who can really touch me with the spirituality in his lyrics and music, is a grumpy old bastard in real life, according to his ex-wive.

So, when i am being critical of the person Prince, and personally i think there is a LOT to be critical about, i try not to let that spoil the pleasure of enjoying its music.

IMO he should never have gone on the Oprah show, just a few days after his baby died, with that he did put business, promoting Emancipation, above more important things: personal grief in this case.
He shows jerk-like, shortsighted behaviour with suing his own fan-sites, and is spoiling his musical heritage by NOT allowing younger folks to see what he is capable of on sites like Youtube and videogoogle.
And when he was under the 'Jehovah spell' (he still is? no idea) he made very rude remarks about Wendy and Lisas sexuality, that made Bobby Z. leave the room. Something i should have done myself, when i was Bobby at that moment. Next to that, it screwed his opportunities for a reunion of the Revolution.

Just a few examples to show that i think its really legit to question certain actions of 'the person' Prince.
But that criticism, doesnt make me a 'lesser' fan. I mean: i am in the first place a fan of his music. Its the essence. As long as his music keeps exciting me (well, honestly, it have been hard times since 1995, but i still have hopes and expectations, lol) i will see myself as a fan... of his music that is.

I've shit on Prince a few times for making particular songs but never for his sexual orientation. I've speculated as to whether or not he is gay and I actually believe he is gay but hasn't admitted it to himself. That's not an insult to him though, it's a compliment, because 100% normal is 100% boring and Andy don't like nothing normal. The freakier the better.
