The Beatles have influenced music that didn't even WANT to be influenced by the Beatles. Their shear presence and influence on other artists(influence by proxy) says that Princes music has been influenced by them. The Beatles expaneded the length of the pop song on radio, which Prince surely has taken advantage of...just to state one example.

Q: If a 12 year old, patterns his hoop game after Kobe, who was influenced by Michael Jordan, who was influenced by Dr. J, who was inflenced by Connie Hawkins) is the 12 year old influenced by Connie who he has NEVER seen or heard of?

It's really a question about the extent to which Prince was, or even if he's ever been in fact, influenced by The Beatles. Of course the main thrust and influence for Prince has always been artists like Hendrix, Brown, Sly and The Family Stone and George Clinton to name the plainly obvious. Led Zeppelin could also be said to have been a much bigger influence than The Beatles were in his music as well. I have heard some critics though, compare 'Parade' to The Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds' album. To my knowledge however, Prince has never even mentioned their name in any interviews, much less to have ever been influenced by them. I may easily be wrong about this of course. Who really knows for sure right?

That's a very interesting question. I think it could inspire a long debate (shit, what doesn't around here?) lol

My interpretation of influence must be different from everyone elses. When I hear someone say influence, that means that Prince's foundation as a musician is based in part in the Beatles. That is just NOT the case. Did Prince listen 2 a few Beatle songs and than create his own versions of that style? Maybe, but that is NOT the same as influence. At least NOT 2 me.

That's how I perceive influence to be. As far as the Beatles is concerned with Prince, it's more similarity than influence.

Influences would contribute to defining a style, and other than a couple of songs and images, I don't feel that Prince is anything like them.

It's been an enjoyable debate though and raised some really good points!

That just about sums it up.

Influence vs. similarity...different things. There's a word that's needed to describe the amount of Beatle music that had an effect on Prince's output/image, but "influence" ain't it. That's a loosely used word as it is.

1. George did every drug that existed.

2. George knew when to and wanted to play the game.

I don't think people UNDERSTAND this enough.

Ain't THAT the truth.

Based on the logic of this thread, Prince has been influenced by EVERYONE who recorded a record before him. 2 that, I say BULLSH*T!

I hear you...

P was into all kinds of music and artists coming up, and I'm sure he messed with the Beatles, but it's clear who and what he was really checking for and the idea that certain records are evidence of the Beatle influence is a bit extra. That reminds me of all the people who run around calling some record or artist "Prince-like" or claiming there's a "Prince sound" or who try to find Prince Purple Essence in every song ever recorded past 77.

The ones 'believing' in Prince like some pure funk-creature, like Graycap23 tends to show, almost appear as some smallminded, dogmatic people.

Get a life, music is so much broader then your frustated prejudices.

Oh larwd.....

Exactly my sentiments!

It's so ridiculously obvious that Prince was influenced by the Beatles, especially if you are a musician/producer who has tried to come up with album concepts and hit sounding singles. He even coyly has sidestepped the question in the past just as he did with comparisons to Hendrix. Prince always likes to be the clever trixster. Ask him who is favorite is and he names his current line up of musicians.

He is showing his true colors these days with who he covers: The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zepplin...

These were the bands he heard over and over in the 70's, the standard for artistic integrity and pop accomplishment at the time.

True, and you could not hide from their music even if you tried, even today, i cant turn on the TV or radio, walk into a store, work, anywhere and not hear them.
