Why I think that Elvis Costello is better than Prince

Elvis Costello is consistently brilliant and I believe that his songwriting skills are far superior to Prince's... but that's not the only reason that I think he is better.

Rhino Records is re-releasing all of Elvis Costello's records in special re-mastered editions...

Elvis Costello had them release the discs as two-disc sets for the price of a single disc. That is cool in and of itself, but it gets better... the second disc of each set is loaded with alternate takes, demos, live tracks and other unreleased material.

Do you think that Prince would EVER do something this cool for his fans, or do you think that he would try to gouge you for $100 for 4 discs and NOT include anything cool?

Four discs from Elvis Costello = $30 at Best Buy
Eight discs from Elvis Costello = $60 at Best Buy
Twelve discs from Elvis Costello = $90 at Best Buy
You could technically call this 6 discs if you already have the original disc and only want the demos, outtakes and live recordings.

Four discs from Prince = $100 at NPGMC

Elvis Costello is my favorite artist!

Plus Elvis Costello obviously has a sense of humor as he let the Simpsons make fun of him.

The one some time back was about Elvis Costello being a better songwriter than Prince... this one is about his being much cooler to his fans.

David Lee Roth said it best about why Elvis Costello gets even half the Love He gets: Quote He looks just like the Music Critics that Praise His Stuff.a Cat like Bobby Womack would Whip Costello's Ass&Bill Withers as well.Costello is a Cheap Burt Bacharach IMHO.The Carpenters wrote far better songs than Wack Ass Costello IMHO.

The reason music critics like Elvis Costello is because he is brilliant and his songs are brilliant... he is, without a doubt, the greatest lyricist in music today.

Not to be insulting, but that is your opinion, just as my opinion is that Elvis Costello would wipe the fucking bathroom floor with Stevie Wonder and then clean the toilet bowl with his braids.

Now, seriously... this topic is about Elvis Costello's remastered releases with extra tracks and how that is much cooler than anything that Prince will do for his fans... can we get back on topic?

"Pump It Up"
"Alyson...my aim i s trueee"
my fav

Elvis Costello - Watching The Detectives

nice girls not one with a defect
cellophane shrink-wrapped, so correct
red dogs under illegal legs
she looks so good that he gets down and begs

she is watching the detectives, ooh, he's so cute
she is watching the detectives
when they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
they beat him up until the teardrops start
but he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart

long shot of that jumping sign
visible shivers running down my spine
cut the baby taking off her clothes
close-up of the sign that says, we never close

you snatch a tune, you a match a cigarette
she pulls the eyes out with a face like a magnet
I don't know how much more of this I can take
she's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake

you think you're alone until you realize you're in it
now fear is here to stay, love is here for a visit.
they call it instant justice when it's past the legal limit.
someone's scratching at the window. I wonder who is it

the detectives come to check if you belong to the parents
who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance
though it nearly took a miracle to get you to stay
it only took my little fingers to blow you away

just like watching the detectives, don't get cute
it's just like watching the detectives
I get so angry when the teardrops start
but he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart
watching the detectives
it's just like watching the detectives

Ice, i don't know much about Costello, so i can't argue
about his music. But, the way i see it, there is a
reason that i don't know his stuff...at some point, an
artist must be played on the radio for people to be exposed
to their music. I don't think I've ever heard any of his
songs on the radio.
Radio Prince got me interested, then, thru research and
his vast variety of music, i became hooked...a "fam" if you
will.
But, hold on, Prince is so much more than his enriched songs... in my eyes, he is the ultimate entertainer.
I love his dancing, his playing, his singing. He has built
an empire (paisley) on his own merits and now does whatever
he wants, whenever he wants. Shit, even his looks and
personal life is interesting. Being an org member, you know
how enthralled people are with this man.
Prince rules the land, all other's are just pretenders, IMO.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Right on Mistermaxx. He is a nerdy white guy like most music critics. He could never jump musical styles the way Prince does so in my opinion he is not Prince's equal as a all around musical force.

If you must put someone above Prince as a composer. Try Stevie Wonder.

I think you are forgot thay any remasterd music from Prince would be up to Warner Brothers. Why don't you send a e-mail
Warner Brothers and find out why this has not happened.

In addtion, when Elvis starts doing after shows and letting his fans come to his soundchecks and studio he will get his cool card.

1) I think Neil Finn is a far superior songwriter to Prince

2) I think Brian Setzer makes more enjoyable albums than Prince

3) I think James Brown and George Clinton are larger innovators than Prince

4) I think artists like Kiss and David Bowie show more respect to thier fans

5)Prince had a great period from 1984-1988, and the bootlegs show he is capable of so much more than he wants to show- there lays the facination

Q: WOULD YOU HAVE BOUGHT NPS, RAVE, CHAOS AND DISORDER, ETC. if they were made by an unknown artist like MIKE SWANSON?

well, my 2 cents. first off i think that when certain artists hit a certain pinicle, you can't really say one is globally better than the other. i would put both prince and elvis in that catagory. each has marvelous qualities.

elvis's re-issues are fantastic. the inclusion of the 2nd discs are amazing. i've only been able to get a couple so far, but they are amazing.

elvis is very good to his fans, and is very approachable. after the atlanta shows about 2 weeks ago, he would come out of the bus and visit with fans, allow and pose for photos with fans, and sign all kinds of stuff.

on the matter of his abilities as a lyricist, i have to side with icenine on this. elvis is one of the most brilliant lyricists in modern music of any style. his use of language, his ability to twist meanings and create double and triple entendres is astounding. he is a very literate lyricist and layers meaning on many levels. he is unparalleled. he richly deserves his induction into the rock and roll hall of fame on the first ballot, which happened.

he does and has jumped styles many times. he started out doing punky/new wave, he has done straight motown, blues, country, he has toured with the charles mingus big band, singing jazz, his music incorporates all manner of styles.

that being said, prince does a lot of things elvis could never do. i love them both

and lastly, did someone here seriously quote DAVID LEE ROTH'S opinion. you have to be kidding me, david lee roth? the fact that anyone would qoute him completely destroys the credibility of any argument that you intend to make. i mean really, david lee roth???

Im not an Elvis Costello fan and I still agree with that!

But fan accessibility has nothing to do with the quality of the artist's music or their musical abilities. And Prince's accessibility during the ONA tour is something how many other performers are doing?
