What's the Deal with the PA?

OK, people, this has been irritating me lately.

I've noticed that now when I see Prince albums for sale, all of P's albums [with the exception of maybe ATWIAD and Parade] that they are all have a PA [parental advisory] rating. In SOTT he virtually whispers or "hides" the fact that he saying some [e.g. "funk"] and PR he [or someone] says the f-bomb BACKWARDS in a song and the word masterbating, then Lovesexy...does he even say a curse word in that one? But they're all rated PA now. I think its ridiculous. Why go back and change it? There are plenty of albums that probably should have a PA rating/sticker [I think of Janet's Velvet Rope, and there's many more].

I can understand 1999, but the others? I just think it's ridiculous, and I haven't been here in a while, but I just wanted to vent for a second.

Thanks

Yeah, I just think it's ... dumb. neutral
Isn't it [the rating] supposed to serve a purpose, or is there to scare the kids away? lol

But yes, I suppose it does have to do with reputation.
So I'm assuming there really aren't guidelines as to what SHOULD and SHOULDN'T be PA...

I'm going to laugh.out.loud if they make Prince & For You PA. lol

The rating isn't just for the "eff word." It's for content. Personally, I think parents have a right to know what their kids are listening to. Parents who don't care what their kids listen to aren't going to be bothered by a sticker, frankly.

Something tells me you weren't around when Lovesexy wasn't even placed in the racks at the wrecka stow. They were selling that thing from behind the counter back in the day.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I know about the nekkid picture, OK sure. Sex in the album title, semi-crossdressing, gotcha. I still don't see that as a reason to slap a pa sticker on it after 20 years.

But then I think I'm just biased when it comes to P's stuff.

But I just remembered: it's entirely up to the record label to decide on whether something is deserving of that rating or not. I'm thinking wb might be using it as a marketing tool to make younger people more apt to P's "durty" albums as opposed to his supposed "good guy" albums (which I happen to love) [or P albums sans wb]. That makes a little more sense, then.

Vent executed.

WB was probably covering their asses a little bit with some of the stickers. Since he was at the center of the controversy that started it all, and he didn't mind being labeled, they probably figured they might as well stick it on.

Contentwise, Lovesexy could count as needing a PA sticker. I still think the "Come butterfly straight on your skin" line is about him ejaculating on his lover and thinking it looks like a butterfly. Then he talks about cumming again. And in SOTT, he doesn't cover the F word up very well. It's pretty clear to hear "I ain't fucking just for kicks" and "Can't nobody fuck with us" on there.
