I don't know the story...However, I do know that God loves everybody...even if they can't handle the outside world and the system it operates under....Sometimes people in the nuthouse...are extremely intelligent, and for some reason lost in alienation, and then dependent on hospital care...it's sad, and if one of us is in the nuthouse...we all are.

Several years older than Prince, Alfred was also musically talent--he sang along to his large collection of James Brown records with fervor--and he was also colorful and unconventional, wearing his hair in a crazed Little Richard-style do and flashing bills that came from goodness knows where. "We thought he was some kind of pimp or something," recalled Smith. Impervious to any sort of discipline, Alfred would sneak out of the house through his bedroom window late at night and return the same way, sometimes surprising Prince and Smith, who often came in to try on his wild outfits and listen to James Brown.

While little is known about the extent of Albert's musical gifts or ambitions, it is striking that so many of his quirks--strange sartorial habits and hairstyles, a fascination with James Brown, and an odd relationship with food, among others--emerged in Prince as well. But Albert was ultimately less successful than Prince in controlling and channeling his idiosyncratic impulses. According to Smith, he became disturbed and ended up in a Minneapolis mental institution.

Another musical influence on the young, impressionable Prince, was his older half-brother Alfred, who lived at home with him and Tyka. He was into James Brown and had his hair like Little Richard. "He had an incredible voice, but he was a strange cookie," recalls Charles. "Nobody really knew anything about him. He would climb out of his window in the basement. Me and Prince would go into his room, and he would scare us by sneaking back in. He was the weirdest dude." According to Charles, Alfred was later declared mentally disturbed and committed to a state mental institution in St. Peter.
