That whole album, bless it, is twenty times nastier than PR. And I thought it was pretty popular? I don't know. By 84, did not most people know who Prince was?

And I thought it was pretty popular? I don't know. By 84, did not most people know who Prince was? I'm pretty sure my dad didn't know about Prince until PR came on I'm sure he would have gotten 1999 if he had known about him then. It's very true. On the whole, 1999 is much nastier. I didn't mind that line in "Little Red Corvette" all that much. I already liked the song/video so much that I didn't care what he meant. So between that song, Let's Pretend we're Married, Automatic (the video= enough said), Lady Cab Driver and International Lover... yeah, 1999 has quite a rap sheet, but its also noted as one of his best ever, if not the best ever. PR was just on a greater scale so more people were likely to come across "Darling Nikki," whether it'd be on disc or in the movie (to the "untrained" eye, his stint in the movie... well, you get the idea). Other than that, the album is pretty clean I tell ya, though, that song had to have been something if it inspired the "Parental Advisory" label. Now that's defining controversy something Prince has been doing since he got that contract, but this time, just about the whole world knows about it had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Maybe white audiences hadn't caught up to him by that time? I know black radio had been playing his stuff for a while.
I thought with 1999 they were showing him on MTV and all that kinda stuff and he had reached a broader audience. I have NO IDEA what I'm talking about by the way, I wasn't even BORN. So stop me if I'm spouting non-sense.

I remember this happening. I saw part of some senate committee meeting on it (or some official meeting that was shown on TV). They read lyrics to "Darling Nikki" and "Jack U Off." And I think the said something about "Sister" and "Head" too. But "dirty mind" was one of the first albums from a major label to have a warning on it.
I see their point, bu other than misusing the word "Explicit", the labels lead to more 'naughty' themes and let the kids know what albums had the dirty lyrics. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

As far as why "darling Nikki" and not "let's pretend were married" or "sister" or any of his many other dirtier songs was Popularity. Purple Rain was a much bigger hit so more people heard it. One of them was tipper. She flips out and opens Pandora's box. The next thing we know some albums have a warning on them. [Edited 3/26/08 10:29am] "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

I Love those senate committee meeting that are on complete non-issues. Thats why C-Span is better than comedy central.

Am I the only one to notice that there is a more literal interpretation to the words "masturbating with a magazine?"
Think ... rolled up magazine! I think Tipper would've had puppies if she'd interpreted it that way!

They do not even interpret the songs correctly:
"Another album by Prince called "Dirty Mind" presents a positive attitude toward the subject of incest. " For one Dirty Mind had a warning on it. For two, in the song he makes it clear he wants out of the sexual aspect. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

I dunno, shall we organise a poll then? I would've thought the rolled up magazine would be a bit too conspicuous for a hotel lobby! I'm sure the intended meaning is that she's giving herself a discreet "kit-kat" while reading said magazine.

It is controversial because of the lyrics and the mental images it creates
