We rave about his music...

But sometimes his lyrix get me the most. I mean, I love the moodiness his compositions portray and I go crazy for the chords the guitar, piano, the beat of the drums and the sound of the horns do for the music but sometimes, i love his lyrix more. For example:
"If you cant find the reason for the smoke, there's probably water in the fire."

"Theres a lady...ninety nine years old, if she led a good life, heaven takes her soul...thats a theory and if ya dont wanna know...step aside and make a way for those who want to go."

"Ur body was designed 2 respond 2 mine, in spite of your desire 2 mold me."

There's so much more I could post but I cant even begin to think of them. In the end, I find myself listening to his music over and over again, yes because it sounds good and makes me move but primarily because of what he is saying and how he says it.

I agree. I love Prince's writing...Romantic, loving, sexy, and deep.

I have a hard time sitting down and thinking. I let my mind get carried away with what must have been inspiring him as his wrote the many many lyrix he has written, and how the chemistry was with people who co-wrote lyrix with him.

Mine, too!
I had a friend who would get so annoyed because I would dismiss a song if I thought the words were "stupid". She would rave that I need to just listen to the beat. Nooooo..... I need to hear what the artist is trying to say to me! wink

(Okay, a funky beat helps, too! music)

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

this old lady lyric is terrible.

the other 2 quotes I like though, especially the 3rd.

I like the old lady quote because its basically saying that those who chose not to believe shouldnt get in the way of anothers belief or try to stop that belief. I think it a strong way of saying "Dont get in the way of my deliverance."

Imago

Princes lyrics of late have sucked ass.

But in the past he's REALLY said something that just blew me away.

"There is lonely. Then there is lonely. Then there is how I feel right now."
I love "There is Lonely" especially when he references how Cain might have felt i comparison to himself.

Also, "Maceo, Can U Blow" from Pretty Man was pretty romantic.

lol Maceo Can U Blow....

There is Lonely is a very depressing song and the line about Cain is unexpectedly good.

I lean towards the music much more than lyrics or vocals. It's about an 80/20 split.

The thing I appreciate most about his lyrix are how they answer questions.

That's how I am too for the most part. I'm more about the groove and how the music is hitting me, but if the lyrics are something that grabs me, then I ride with that. Like icing on the cake.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Same here.

I didn't begin to appreciate musicianship until I got into Prince. Before, I would read/hear such comments on Youtube that would say "OMG, that organist/guitarist/drummer is killing it!" or "Do you hear those chords progressions?"....I'd be like....ummm ok, what's so significant about it? I'm listening to the vocals. But now I am constantly listening to all of the instruments & arrangements. It makes me disappointed that real musicality in today's mainstream music is nearly non-existent.

memories mar my mind
love it is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
and laughed at by the Gods
and now the final frame
Love is a losing game

This is true and I agree it is disappointing that mainstream lacks melodic composition...but I believe in the poetry of music just as strongly. We wouldnt have classic songs written by Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Elton John, Eric Clapton, The Eagles had it not been also for the lyrix they so awesomely wrote along with the unbelivable music. Sometimes a song can be bare like "Tangerine" for example and the lyrix comes along and makes it more.
