PARADE/SIGN O' THE TIMES: Memories of the Past (4)... NEXT INSTALLMENT! As usual, I'll start: -PARADE: Okay, I was starting to soften to the idea of Prince. Now I was still feelin' Rick James, but Prince was growing on me... I liked "Parade" okay; I thought "Mountains" was a wonderful song. So I went to see "Under the Cherry Moon" with a group of friends- about 10 of us. We settled in the neighborhood movie theater, all in one row, and started watching the movie. At first everyone was quietly watching the movie. Then my friend Jarrett slowly moved to the row behind us. All of a sudden, he grabbed me around the neck and yelled, "GIVE ME THE KEYS!!! I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!" Everyone in the theater started laughing. He actually left and sat in the car. Honestly, I didn't think UTCM was that good. I tried to give it credit, but now I just find it funny. I watched it recently from beginning to end, and just thought it was hilarious! (Sorry!) -SIGN O' THE TIMES: My conversion was complete! I bought that album for my sister's birthday (on vinyl), and I ended up taking it and buying her something else. At this point, I was living in college with a Prince fanatic (Sammi I played that album over and over.... If U ask me at which point I actually became a PRINCE FAN, I'd say 1987. The title track sucked me in and the rest of the album grew on me quickly. To this day, one of my "car jams" is "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night". So.... Whatcha got? "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Let me start it off:
Parade - this was my 1st Prince album. I was 7 at this time and I heard Kiss and I LOVED this song but it took me listening to the song about 5 or 6 times for me to accept that it was Prince singing it, even after watching the video. It was also around the time that Under the Cherry Moon was coming out and even though I didn't want to see it (I think the Black and White thing threw me off) I was excited. Who remembers the Under the Cherry Moon premiere on MTV? That was hot! Mom and I went to see my Dad in Las Vegas that summer and while were there, Mom brought Parade for me and I couldn't wait till we came back to NY so I could listen to it. When I heard Christopher Tracy's Parade, I knew it was not going to be Purple Rain 2. I liked it but I thought it was strange. Kiss and Mountains made me play it over and over. It's funny, that next April (1987) I was home from school and it actually snowed, so I put on Sometimes it Snows in April! FAst forward to 1999 when I brought the CD. I hadn't heard the album in ages but when I heard PArde again, with grown up ears. I LOVED IT! It was like hearing again for the first time. It's my favorite Prince album now, as of 3/14/2008. Sign O The Times: I vaguely remember hearing SOTT on the radio at the time and it was once. IT wasn't until I saw the U Got The Look video that I was excited about Sign O The Times. This was when I started to realize that he seemed to be making albums every year. Mom and I went back to Vegas to see my Dad again and that trip sucked but one of the few things that was good about it was Mom getting me the SOTT's album. It had it's own section with a blue heart on the top of it and I remember that the section was half full. When we got back to NYC, I when I remember being shocked that I heard Prince curse on Housequake. I was 8 at this point so after that, I hurried up and turned the volume down. Sorry for being so long winded. It's nice to go back down memory lane. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I forgot about the "Parade" tour:
1) I was broke, and I called home from college to ask my parents for the $35. for a ticket. (Can U imagine they were ever that cheap?! 2) I got the flu. Even tho my roommate came up with an extra ticket for me, I was too sick to go. They covered me with a blanket on the couch, and were out the door. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. I have to really clear the cob webs...
Parade was an especially wonderful album to me. I especially dug the strings, the drumming, piano, and the sax arrangements. I was taking French in college so I loved the French music touches and language usage. I was dating a guy named Tracy ( his middle name was Christopher) and it was my first ever April snow experience ( while listening to SISIA on my walkman). UTCM made me laugh and I thought it was very entertaining. Girls and Boys was an instant favorite because of the funk, the French, and the video. I thought SISIA was the saddest but most beautiful song I had ever heard. SOTT...This album was both classic, ecclectic, passionate, silly, deep, and too funky. I began to see that Prince could really do anything he wanted and still have quality and quantity. I was really a true admirer of the music more so than the man until I heard 'Adore' (my favorite song ever). I then realized that Prince was growing artistically, spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and romantically. This album is probably my favorite because it gave so much in so little time and I have never looked back. Certified admirer/fan/fam for life...I'll have the purple kool-aid on the rocks with a twist thanks. [Edited 3/14/08 19:01pm]

o gracious so UTCM just hit theaters ..and NOTHING was gettin'in my way of seeing it, and i went during the Matineè, cause i wanted to beat the crowds that come during prime time (7pm).. get in, get settled and i look around.. there's just me , 3 other females and a dude .. movie starts.. scene of piano is playin' (naration is going on), soon as the camera moves upward to show Prince, all of us, me and the other females scream the theater down, for like 3-4 minutes like we lost our minds, didnt know what went down during the dialogue of the film cause of all the screaming... theater dude comes in with flashlight he's like [Edited 3/14/08 17:03pm]

For Parade, I was kinda pissed to the height to pissivity with Prince because he did his premiere in Sheridan, Wy instead of LA like he did for Purple Rain. I got to go to the premiere of Purple Rain. The only thing that I really remember now about Parade is video taping the premiere from Sheridan and feeling a little sorry for Prince. That chick Lisa Barber just didn't seem to be too excited..
SOTT was just off the chain...I saw the movie in Hollywood with my twin sisters...it was close to midnight and there was hardly anyone was in the theater. It was so much fun and the performance is still timeless to me.... "A united state of mind will never be divided

He just looked at me like I was crazy, smirked, and continued playing. Goal accomplished, the guard escorted me back to my seat in the 10th row getting high-fives all the way up!
