The guitar solo on 777-9311 does not sound like Prince We all know Prince's "coloring" and "phrasing" when it comes to guitar. I'm thinking of how Prince played guitar around that time and I'm thinking of "Bambi". However, that guitar solo on 777-9311 doesn't sound like Prince, at all. People speculated that Prince did everything on the first two albums, but I dispute that.
Specifically, Morris even calls out "Terry", as in Terry Lewis during the bass solo on 777-9311. Does anyone know what the real lineup of musicians was on this album? I may be asking a bit much. Does anyone know if a reporter has ever asked them who really played on their first two albums?

I, still, wonder, though. That does not sound like Prince, at all.

I went to Jesse Johnson's Myspace page. He had a linked Youtube performance of The Time performing "777...". Terry and Jimmy Jam were, still, with the band, at this point.
I can say, now, for sure that Terry Lewis definitely played all the bass on, at least, "777-9311". That didn't sound like Prince's bass playing anyway. That shit is unreal. Jesse was cutting up during this performance but it didn't sound like the album version guitar solo. I get the feeling with The Time that, like the "Pandemonium" album, the group will get Prince demos and, then, they'll work with that themselves adding to it and spicing it up.

That was Prince playing guitar & bass on 777-9311. Morris called out Terry's name because at the Time they were trying put out the illusion that the band played on the record.
The reason why the guitar solo doesn't sound like something Prince would play, is because Prince is trying to mimic Jesse's playing style. You can ask pretty much anyone, and they'd tell you the same thing. Here's an interview Prince did with Bass Player magazine in 1999 that mentions his work on 777-9311: http://princetext.tripod....ass99.html JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

And what does that prove? Only that Morris wanted you to believe it was Terry. It's Prince on bass and Prince on guitar. This is a fact. Ask blackguitaristz if you don't believe me. It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

U pretty much answered your own question. The solo was P. The bass was P. The whole song was P. If u play guitar and u know P's style, u can easily tell that is P on that solo. It's his runs, it's his vibrato. One of the things that throw off most folks is the fact that P used a whammy bar, which was super rare for him at that time. But that's what Jesse always used, then and now. So that's why P used it. The effects that P used on that solo, a wah and an octive pedal, were what Jesse used on his leads on the first Time tour when they opened for P during Controversy. So P just duplicated Jesse's sound. P was very compettive. He wanted to show that he could burn like Jesse could. That's why when The Time were rehearsing, P walked in after recording the song and tossed a tape of 777 to Jesse and said "Hey, U play a mean guitar." Fucking with him. Nowadays I can't recall reading about Prince picking it up. My question, doesn't Prince play the bass live anymore? Or at all for that matter?

Prince came up with that line, and played it on the record. When Prince showed Terry the bassline, Terry made the Funk Face. It is well known that Prince did play the guitar solo, and that he intentionally played it in a similar style 2 what Jesse might have played. "He's a musician's musician..."

He also played it during the London shows. He did a mean intro on Black Sweat. Also, he played on some Musicology shows. I LOVE seeing P on bass - if you can't tell. Updated - Wow, thanks for the BP interview. Great, fun read. I had stopped my subscription back then and missed this issue and the Rhonda issue. I renewed and since they have a new editor, I LOVE the mag again. They've really gotten more diverse in the bass players that they feature now.
