He is a good drummer but is a better guitarist, keyboard and bass player.

He grooved for a bit on drums at one of the aftershows I saw last summer and it was really cool to see.

I think my favorite piece of drumming of his is 'I'm Yours' from the For You album.

Whoa, people.

Prince is an outstanding drummer, and the bit he does on "America", and "Gonna B a Beautiful Night" don't even come CLOSE 2 what the man can do.

Miles Davis said he was a fantastic drummer, and Miles should know.

Even in his early jazz/fusion instrumentals, he was quite proficient on drums.

Listen 2 the drumming on his 1st two albums.

Listen 2 "Tambourine", "Sexual Suicide", "IRRESISTABLE BITCH", etc, etc, etc, etc.

His feel and sense of where and when 2 place accents R superb.

He also knows how 2 lay back on the beat, push slightly ahead of the beat, or just rock right in the pocket.

His drumming should not be underestimated.

He does a significant amount of drumming on his last three albums, so there R current examples as well.

Peace.

Spot on. Although it was rumoured Morris Day played drums on Party Up (The song he wrote), but its never been confirmed.

My favourite Prince drumming is on Tamborine. And when he played the drums on this live he kicked arse.

He's not Michael B, but he is better than Bobby Z!

yeah, 'Tamborine' is killer, but damn, you just listen to the MUSICIANSHIP on Madhouse 8, and you can see that P is a real hardcore MUSICIAN, that's how I view him mostly. Unfortunatly, the POP world and general public are so un-aware of his raw talent, not just writing/singing but his ability on everything.
Drumming/Programming/Percussion/Guitars/Keys and none of them set in one particular style. He just does it all, and in many different ways.

I wanna see more of his SOLO albums, and YES, he drums like a motherfucka!

WORD. I forgot 2 mention Madhouse 8.

Also, the evidence is everywhere, as he's played drums on nearly every album he's released.

I could have definitely named that one 2... no doubt.

I think because of Prince's over-generous credits over the years... in some cases even listing others on instruments that weren't even there... there is confusion about who played what.

Just look at Sheila E's 'Romance 1600' album sleeve credits. SHEESH. He gave the whole band full credit on every song, and in actuality, he played nearly everything.

It even sounds like him on drums on "A Love Bizarre".

Great Points! Irresistable B has a great bass/drum line. I always thought that Prince writes great drum parts and this is consistent with his overall brilliance as a composer/song writer. 777-9311 (so what if it is a drum machine) and When Doves Cry to name a couple have drum/percussion parts that are almost impossible to copy.

Just like Stevie, I love it when P gets behind the drumkit. They both have unique approaches to the instrument based on their superior musical minds.

P can do anything musically if he sets his mind to it (strings, horns, classical, jazz, anything)

awesome timing and rhythm
he comes up with the craziest beats
places those accents where many wouldn't dream
and most couldn't even think to play
he's good

and i'm talking even way back into his early early years

Ronny

no idea if he's technically great but does anyone remember 'tamborine'????

Damn...that was pretty interesting.

I've heard from two reliable sources saying he is 'terrible' and that he as a 'feel' that many great drummers don't have.

Who knows..

Let's not forget a few songs that still rock my world;

The first three songs on Parade; Christopher Tracy's Parade, New Position and I Wonder U.

I heard the tale told he recorded the drum track for those three songs on ONE take, then layered the rest of the tracks over that one.

And Alexa De Paris; which I think always links to his Madhouse work, not just because it's instrumental.

Perhaps he's less practiced at the drums because of his relience on drum machines in the 80's. Mind you at his best he's a great drum programmer.

smile

He did that as well on an aftershow I saw in 1987.
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....
