Compare and Contrast YOUR FAV Vs. Your Least FAV. P Album Prince, if anything, is diverse.
His image, his hairstyles, his moods, his approach to music, his studio approach--EVERYTHING about his defies definition sometimes. Throughout his career he has 're-invented' himself more times than I could count. Albeit, it's not so much a re-invention as it is him just allow us to see various moods and colors of his throughout his career. Where as Madonna's scraggly 'ol ass is credited for being a chameleon, all that bitch really does is read the pulse of nightlife, and follow along. Prince, on the other had, changes his mind more times than President Bush changes his story on his reasons for the utterly illegal war in Iraq. Even Bowie can't seem to hold a candle to Prince when it comes to diversity (sorry Bowie butt puppets, but it's true), as Prince is all over the place. One minute you think Prince is going to suck a big dick, the next lick up on wet vaginas, and the very next he's passing out Watchtowers with Larry Graham and his scraggly 'ol mustache . Anyways here are my choices to compare and contrast: MY FAV PARADE This album encompases everything I spoke about in the afore mentioned paragraphs. It's diverse, it goes through constant gear shifting---AND , it does something that NONE of his peers (Scraggly 'ol Madonna, stupid ass MJ, or George Michael) ever contemplated with their music--IT. TOOK. CHANCES. That's right--Prince gambled everything for an artistic vision. Sure the movie ended up being a giant black-and-white home-movie of a vanity piece, but fun to some degree. The real beauty of the album, to me is that he pulls off all these mood swings and various shades in 41 minutes. That shit is tight! MY LEAST FAV NEWS OK, your turn!

Sign o the Times.
A superb symphony of Prince's achievements in music in a decade. The album was the last in a chain of evolution, that saw its creator progress from nervous novie, through punk provocateur to grandstanding superstar, to erratic nut and with 1986s Parade, Funk God. On Sign Prince proves hes the alchemist of styles, all funky. The album was worked on for at least 18 months and the results show, we have the multi stringed extravaganzas of the late Revolution tracks, discarded songs from the Camille project, along with new songs worked on after the 1986 Parade tour. Every single track on Sign is a classic, lacking any of the filler that characterises the later albums and anything amateurish found on early albums. Prince took 9 albums to find his form and boy has he found it. The Singles like Sign are poignant but funky. Princes artistic mood comes in with classics like Play in the Sunshine, Starfish and Coffee and Dorothy Parker, Gender confusion in If I was ur girlfriend, Even the Bsides rock, with campy Clintonesque ditties such as La La La He Hee Hee and Shockadelica (Both Camille ditties). Relationship problems in Strange relationship and ICNTTPOYM. Sex is dealt to (The raunchy Prince of old) in It and slow love, Christian conviction and some of the best gospel stylings ever in 4eva in my life and grandstand rock of The Cross. We even have a live party feel in "Its gonna be a beautiful nite" the only Revolution track here, but we also get Sheila and Cat on the track, a sign of his post Revolution output. He maintains as his mantle as a Funk God with Housequake and Hot thing, two geniune JB style funky floorfillers (Shut up already Damn!). But by far his best track is the last, the sustained vocal brilliance of Adore, in which his voice tracking experiments beginning with For You, have crescended with what was arguab;ly the greatest piece of soul falsetto ever recorded and topping off his greatest ever set. If any one was ever singing Adore to me, and I knew they meant I would not hesitate!!! From this peak and surveying his minions there was only one way ... down. Fortunately one can not effuse enough with panegyrics of praise so rightfully lauded upon this magnificent work of art. The Rainbow children Its nasty what time can do to a man, whereas Sign was Prince as Jupiter, this is him as a bloated self indulgent Bacchus gone wrong. Here we are treated to substandard reinditions of how much he loves being a JEHOVAHS WITNESS, the album is full of sexist and religious race based tripe such as Muse to the Pharoah and did not offer up one single chart worthy entry. This garbage had shown by 2001 how far Prince had strayed from the mainstream and how god like epics such as Parade and sign were by now dusty relics from the 80's Fortunately for all Musicology was just around the corner. This album made Chaos and Disorder look like the work of a sheer genius. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

@ tane1976's description of Rainbow Children
Do you feel that SOTT benefited a bit from the period of time it was released though? There was nothing like it when SOTT dropped. I would think if Prince released it today, it would be well received but certain not gain the critical acclaim that it did. And this is coming from a standpoint that the songs on the album are just VERY WELL written songs. I always thought Emancipation suffered mainly due to the period of time that it was released. I mean, come on, it was the age of Alanis and Nirvana copycat bands. If Prince had released Emancipation between 1999 and Purple Rain I think it would have gotten rave reviews.
