What genre do all of you put Prince in?

I'm currently re-ripping my Prince & associates music to a highbitrate (I originally ripped everything into 128) because my mp3 has biggest hd space.

I always wondered what gender do fan put on their mp3 tags. I usually put Funk/Rock...

I'd say:

Funk/R&B, though he's done Pop/Rock and a few others.

Prince doesn't even have a definition for the genre of his music.

During the Larry King interview, he said something like:
"Just because I don't like categories, all I can think of is inspirational. Music that comes from the heart falls into that category."

cool I think he says it best personally

he said that so he wouldnt offend any of his fans ... and yeah i can understand what he's saying.. cause seems categories divide ppl .. but even he knows his music falls under different categories.. he does different genres .. so whatever the song falls under is what it is..

I generally put him in the straight-but-feminine-looking-male category.

I ran into this dilemma when I first got my iPod and began adding all of my Prince music to it. I just created my on genre for him in iTunes. I named it "Prince." To date, whenever I add one of his songs I change the genre to that. For me, it's the only thing that fits.

Seeing as his songs are the ONLY songs on my IPOD I guess they meet the un-compartmentalized category.

As someone has already pointed out, it all depends on the song.

He has pure funk, R&B, soul, gospel, something that apparently resembles rapping, pop, rock, acoustic, psychodelica, dance. (anything else to add?)

His body of work is so diverse that I think it's unfair to pinpoint him into one or two genres.

When I rip his CDs to my iTunes, it usually comes up with a genre like 'Funk' or 'Rock' so I just stick with whatever it says. biggrin

Excellent!!

I always classed him as Rock/Funk!!!

He has crossed all musical genres, but I feel his essence is Rock/Funk!

That's exactly what I do too. Anything that has any sort of Prince involvement, be it associated artists, one-off collaborations, covers etc. get put in the 'Prince' genre. That way you can shuffle the genre and your guaranteed to only hear Prince stuff (as opposed to shuffling the artist, in which case you would only get stuff credited to Prince as the artist).

I made one up: R&B/Pop. That seems to fit almost everything he's done.

When you have a large enough collection of music, he doesn't really fall into "Funk" or "Rock" anymore ...

What bitrate are you ripping at, by the way?

Funk up to Purple Rain. Pop, from PR to LoveSexy. Rock from Batman to Truth (more or less), Jazz/Funk/Rock/Soul form Rainbow Children to now (though I haven't heard much material from RC to now)
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

i keep them under the names of the artists it solves the problem of trying to split the songs into seperate genre and they are all nice and easy to find

Great question. To me, he's funk but he does a little of everything so it's hard to just keep it as one thing. I keep it as funk because to me, it's the foundation for his music. Even if it's rock, there's some funk bubbling underneath it.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
