"He used to be innovation personified and a visionary, but I don't see much evidence of that in recent history."

Yes, I've heard that being said many times, and I guess it has substance since the latest albums don't compare to PR, SOTT, etc. on many levels, but still, personally I still prefer him trying to come up with something new rather than clinging to his past and trying to reproduce past successes. I think many people use his early years and past hits as some kind of measure with which to assess the value of anything he produces after them.
To me, to be creative/innovative is also to be bold and daring, to take the risk of creating something that perhaps won't be as good but at least is different and doesn't rest too much on one's past creations.

I'm not sure if Prince would actually grow as an artist if he kept trying to reproduce his past music and successes. But I do like your point that a muse might help... whatever shape it takes, a person, a thought...

He used to be innovation personified and a visionary, but I don't see much evidence of that in recent history.
What he's been doing lately looks more like middle-aged-diva-behavior to me.
I hope he finds a way to reconnect with the real world and snaps out of what has been bugging him for a while now.
I believe he has still got it in him, he just needs to find it again.
Something seems to be blocking the flow right now, leaving his creativity in a deep slumber.
Maybe it would help if he would get off the celebrity-studded gravy train for a while and return to his roots in Minneapolis.
I don't think that partying in LA, or wherever he's been showing up lately is much of an inspiration for him.
All he needs is a muse that will be able to awaken his creativity from its current dormant state.
Just be patient and give him some time; every artist needs to find a way and have the time to reconnect with his creativity.

Dearest Friend,

Things are very fine here and I am always in the best of spirits. I have been assured that I will receive a position here at court. I talked to Count Savioli today and he says that all looks good. Besides, I am ten times the composer Vogler is - the whole orchestra loves me and my music ... though not just my music.

Often I am invited out by my new friends to Cannabich's house - though I am rarely asked to play. I am often enticed to entertain with another of my natural skills - namely jokes and rhymes and silly verses - whose content being rude, obscene and in short sheer garbage.

Of course I would never have behaved so godlessly had I not been egged on by the other revellers - especially our ringleader Madame Cannabich. But at the same time I must confess that I thoroughly enjoyed it and did not get home til after midnight!

Mama says that I should stop mixing with such people and is asking constantly when I am going to shave - Papa too has made enquiries as to how often I am going to confession. But these things no longer concern me - for the game must go on!

i dont write music unless i'm happy with something to say, or pissed off with something to say. if i'm sad i don't write at all. the world doesnt need my misery when there's already so much of it out there. i try to be considerate.

so a muse for me is usually a person who either makes me feel happy or pissed off. if they can do both at the same time, i'll fall in love with them for a while, then when i get bored, i'll move on to the next lovable idiot for more inspiration.

other times i write about spiritual things i find inspiring, so good books and simple life experiences, nature, dreams. family and friends, are all good muses for me also.

Prince a modern-day Mozart?...

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart [from Webster & other dicts.]
"Precocious, prolific, influential, immensely talented and versatile composer, a great dancer, a hardworker who finished works at a tremendous pace, juxtaposed extremes of profundity and buffoonery with no sense of incongruity, called himself by different names, wrestled free from an oppressive employer in mid career, humor tinged with a curious kind of friendly mockery, loved elegant clothing, remarkably small, very thin, with large intense eyes, and a voice that his wife described as 'a tenor, rather soft in speaking and delicate in singing, but when anything excited him, or it became necessary to exert it, it was both powerful and energetic.'"

hmmm those two souls seem to be on the same level...

Mentioning Mozart: I wonder why Prince doesn't try his hand at classical composition & performance (maybe he has?..). I would love to hear him play a little Chopin... or one of his own compositions. Didn't he mention something about a symphony in a recent interview? An opera would be cool too.

here's another great letter lol

4 November 1777
Mannheim

Dearest Friend,

We have been in Mannheim for five days now and I have already met such good people. I wasted no time in introducing myself to the violinist Herr Cannabich - who I had met when I was here fifteen years ago - and you will never guess, but now he runs the orchestra! He has taken quite a liking to me, and Mama and I spend most of our days at his house.

But first I must tell you how my Augsburg story ended. You would think that I would have learnt my lesson, but depsite my better judgement I did end up giving a concert. You will be pleased to know a goodly number of Augsberg nobility was there ... the Duchess Kick Arse, the Countess Piss Happy and also Princess Smell Shit. Of course my playing was a great success - but the audience were a total failure.

I am reminded of a poem I heard in Italy once ...

Before I come back to this dreadful place
I would rather smack myself in the face!.

I am so pleased to be out of that dismal town. But how I love it here! I have already managed to give a small concert of my own, and do you know that nobody said anything bad of my performance or that it was not well composed - quite the contrary. Maybe they are ignorant and need to sent to Salzburg or Augsberg to have lessons on composition?

I have already heard the orchestra play, and truly it is the greatest orchestra in Europe. Each player is so disciplined, like a soldier - but imagine - an army made of little generals! And Herr Cannabich is their leader! What's more is that they are so well paid. Cannabich's salary is 1,800 gulden and the Kappellmeister gets 3,000 - plus beautiful gifts whenever he writes a new piece! What a far cry from our miserly Arch Bishop. Though, as far as singers go, they are at a bit of a loss here - they have only two castrati who can't even reach the high notes anymore. I expect they will probably be left just to die off!

I met the whole orchestra, many of whom knew me by reputation. Herr Kappellmeister Holzbauer said he was very honoured to finally meet me - he is a very fine composer of the old style.

All the aristocracy act as though this were Versailles - and of course the opera houses are dominated by Italians and their frivolous screeching. But God be thanked our Grace the Elector is a true and honorable German, and rumour has it that he would like a new German opera. Oh and look - it just so happens that only five days ago a mestro of the German opera arrived in town! I should enjoy very much showing him how grand our German opera can be.

I have every confidence that I will be offered a permanent position at court very easily. Herr Vice-Kappellmeister Vogler is nothing but a joke - of which I will write more next time - but now I must rush to finish so that I will catch the post before 4 o'clock.

Wolfgang Amade Mozart.
